Upcoming Proton Saga Cross (AMA02) spotted again; clearest look yet of potential two variants; one with roof rails and one without, FutureMotion HEV possible?

The upcoming Proton Saga Cross has been spotted again, and this could be the clearest look yet at Proton’s upcoming small SUV. The latest imagens- courtesy of threads user adamsgreen07 - shows two fully camouflaged test units parked side by side, giving us a better idea of the model’s shape, proportions and possible variant differences.

The most obvious difference is on the roof. One test car appears to be fitted with roof rails, while the other does not. That strongly suggests Proton could be testing more than one variant, with the roof rails likely reserved for a higher-spec version.

This also matches earlier reports, where separate Saga Cross test units were spotted with different rear spoiler sizes, again hinting at multiple variants or possibly different powertrain configurations.

The Saga Cross is understood to be linked to Proton’s AMA02 project. AMA stands for Advanced Modular Architecture, and we previously reported that the new Saga sedan is the first AMA-based model, known as AMA01, while AMA02 is expected to be the crossover derivative.

Powertrain-wise, earlier reports suggest the Saga Cross could be offered with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated BHE15 petrol engine, producing 120 PS and 150 Nm. Power is expected to be sent to the front wheels through a 4-speed automatic transmission.

The more interesting possibility is hybrid power. The Saga Cross is rumoured to be a potential recipient of Proton’s new FutureMotion HEV system, which was shown at KLIMS 2026. That setup pairs a 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle naturally aspirated engine with a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission, for a total of 163 PS.
