The Proton X50 finally goes to Indonesia...somewhat: Geely Coolray previewed in the island, new X50 interior but old exterior, 1.5L turbo + DCT

The Proton X50 is now in Indonesia… somewhat. Geely has officially introduced the Coolray in the republic, bringing in the compact SUV that Malaysians will immediately recognise as the model family behind Proton’s popular X50.

For Indonesia, the Coolray marks Geely’s first internal combustion engine model in the market. The SUV was introduced through an exclusive first drive session at the Mandalika International Circuit in Lombok, with prices to be announced later at GIIAS 2026.

The Indonesian-spec Coolray is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine producing 174 PS and 290 Nm. Drive is sent to the front wheels through a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, with four selectable drive modes: Eco, Comfort, Sport and Adaptive. According to Geely’s product highlight material, the SUV has a claimed top speed of 200 km/h.

Dimensionally, the Coolray measures 4,380 mm long, 1,795 mm wide and 1,609 mm tall, with a 2,600 mm wheelbase and 161 mm ground clearance. It is a five-seater SUV, with kerb weight listed at 1,335 kg for the Standard and 1,383 kg for the Flagship.

Two variants are listed for Indonesia: Standard and Flagship. Both use the same engine and transmission, but the Flagship gets more equipment, including a sportier exterior package, larger wheels and additional driver assistance features.

On the outside, the Coolray carries a sporty design with a two-tone exterior, sculpted body lines and a rear spoiler. The Standard variant uses 17-inch alloy wheels, while the Flagship gets 18-inch sporty black alloy wheels. The Flagship also adds items such as a panoramic sunroof, electric tailgate, auto wipers and privacy glass.

Inside, the Coolray is positioned with a sportier cabin theme. The Flagship gets a black and burnt red two-tone interior, perforated leather seats, a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, rear centre armrest, 60:40 split-folding rear seats, ambient lighting and an eight-speaker audio system. The Standard has a black interior with fabric seats and four speakers.

Both variants come with an 8.8-inch LCD instrument cluster, 14.6-inch HD touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and remote connectivity. Wireless charging is reserved for the Flagship.

Safety is one of the bigger differences between the two variants. Both get six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, traction control, hill-start assist, hill-descent control, tyre pressure monitoring and ISOFIX.

The Flagship adds a larger driver assistance suite, including adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, intelligent high beam, traffic sign recognition, speed limit information and traffic jam assist.

The Flagship also gets a 540-degree panoramic camera with transparent chassis view, while the Standard uses a rear-view camera. Geely’s product material describes this as part of the Coolray’s “Sanctuary Shield” safety package.

In Indonesia, the Coolray will compete in the compact SUV space against models such as the Honda HR-V, Hyundai Creta, Mitsubishi XForce and Suzuki Grand Vitara. Its final pricing will be crucial, especially as Indonesia’s SUV market is now filled with both Japanese rivals and a growing number of Chinese brands.
