2027 Toyota Tundra: Fresh Look, Upgraded Tech, Plus Trailhunter Package!

Toyota has officially unveiled the fully refreshed 2027 Toyota Tundra, a heavy-hitter in the North American full-size pickup truck market. This annual model year refresh not only brings a more rugged and sharper exterior design alongside more powerful infotainment and safety technologies, but also introduces the highly cost-effective, factory-backed Trailhunter overlanding package based on a mid-range trim for the very first time.

New Trailhunter package: Making Factory-Built, Hardcore Off-Roading More Accessible

In the past, Toyota's Trailhunter package was predominantly seen on mid-size pickups like the Tacoma. However, the 2027 Tundra introduces this hardcore off-road lineage into the full-size pickup segment for the first time.

An Affordable Route Built on the SR5 Trim: Displacing itself from the ultra-luxurious or top-tier TRD Pro, the new Trailhunter package is built upon the relatively affordable and practical SR5 trim level (the current Tundra lineup comprises the SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794, and TRD Pro). By lowering the barrier to entry, Toyota aims to allow more budget-conscious buyers—who still crave an off-road pickup—to realise their adventure dreams at a far more attractive price point.

Hardcore off-road hardware upgrades:

Upgraded Old Man Emu suspension system

Michelin LTX Trail 265/70R18 all-terrain tyres and unique bronze wheels

Reinforced underbody skid plates, front tow hooks, and a locking rear differential

Standard Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) and Crawl Control, significantly improving traction and recovery capabilities in challenging off-road conditions.

Powertrain and styling: As it is based on the SR5, this version is expected to be powered by the potent 3.4-litre twin-turbo V6 engine (not hybrid), producing 389 hp. Externally, the exclusive bronze wheels and body badging add a rugged yet premium touch to its muscular body lines.

A More Rugged and Aggressive Exterior Design

The entire 2027 Tundra range receives a comprehensive mid-life facelift, featuring a redesigned front fascia that delivers a bolder visual presence:

More imposing front end: Penned by Toyota's North American CALTY Design Research Centre, the front grille lines are now more squared-off and muscular, complemented by a highly three-dimensional lower bumper design.

Upgraded lighting signature: The integrated LED light bar within the grille sees a significant brightness boost. Paired with rectangular fog lamps, it offers superior night-time visibility and clarity during foul weather.

A Massive Leap in Smart Tech and Safety Systems

Beyond the exterior and mechanical evolutions, the 2027 Tundra makes zero compromises in the digital cockpit and active safety features:

Standard 14-inch infotainment screen and 5G connectivity: All variants now feature a standard 14-inch touchscreen running the latest-generation Toyota Multimedia system. It supports 5G connectivity with a smoother user interface and faster response times, while the upgraded "Hey Toyota" voice assistant also delivers fast responses.

Standard Drive Recorder Dash Cam: Making its debut, the integrated dashcam uses the vehicle's external cameras (front, rear, or the Panoramic View Monitor) to automatically save 20-second high-definition video clips when manually triggered or in the event of an impact.

Upgraded Digital Key: Owners can now store and manage their digital key in their smartphone's native digital wallet (such as Apple, Google, or Samsung Wallet) on top of using the official Toyota App. It supports remote locking/unlocking and starting, and even if the phone's battery runs out, vehicle access remains possible via NFC for a short duration.

Standard Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 (TSS 4.0): Active safety and driver assistance systems get a major upgrade in hardware and detection range. This includes the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD), Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA), Automatic High Beams (AHB), Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), Road Sign Assist (RSA), and Proactive Driving Assist (PDA).

Market outlook

The 2027 Toyota Tundra retains a diverse variant lineup, ranging from the utilitarian SR and SR5 work trucks to the premium Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition, TRD Pro, Capstone, and the newly added Trailhunter. In terms of powertrains, buyers can choose between the conventional twin-turbo V6 petrol engine and the powerful i-FORCE MAX hybrid setup.

Toyota states that full specifications and final pricing for the 2027 Tundra will be officially released in Autumn 2026. For reference, the current 2026 Tundra SR5 starts at around USD 48,705 (approx. RM 199,000), meaning the 2027 model with the Trailhunter package added is expected to easily breach the USD 50,000 (approx. RM 204,000) mark.

For truck enthusiasts and overlanding fans, this new full-sized pickup—blending rugged looks, advanced tech, and hardcore off-road capability—is certainly one to watch. If the 2027 Toyota Tundra ever makes its way to Malaysia, would you get one?
