Neue Klasse 2026 BMW iX3 set for Malaysia debut on 6 August

BMW Malaysia will unveil its first Neue Klasse model on 6 August, with the all-new BMW iX3 widely expected to make its local debut as the brand’s next-generation electric SUV.

The company confirmed the launch date through a teaser shown at a media screening of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, signalling the start of BMW’s Neue Klasse rollout in Malaysia.

While BMW Malaysia has not named the model outright in the teaser, the iX3 is the most likely candidate. Registration of interest for the electric SUV has already been open on the company’s website since late last year.

BMW has also previously said that an all-new BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase will be launched in Malaysia. That version uses a 3,005mm wheelbase, which is 108mm longer than the standard model, giving rear passengers more space.

It is still not clear whether the standard-wheelbase iX3 or the long-wheelbase version will arrive first in Malaysia.

Globally, the Neue Klasse iX3 is currently offered in a single variant, the iX3 50 xDrive. It uses a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup and produces 345kW, or 463hp, along with 645Nm of torque.

BMW says the SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 4.9 seconds and has a top speed of 210km/h.

The iX3 50 xDrive is built on BMW’s Gen 6 eDrive platform and carries a 108.7kWh NMC battery. Depending on configuration, the WLTP-rated driving range is listed at 679km to 805km, while combined energy consumption is claimed at 15.1kWh to 17.9kWh per 100km.

Charging figures are a major part of the Neue Klasse pitch. Thanks to its 800V architecture, the SUV supports DC charging at up to 400kW. BMW claims a 10-minute charge can add up to 372km of range, while a 10% to 80% top-up takes 21 minutes.

For home charging, the new iX3 can be configured with either an 11kW or 22kW three-phase onboard charger. It is also BMW’s first EV to support bidirectional charging, including Vehicle-to-Load, Vehicle-to-Home and Vehicle-to-Grid functions when paired with the BMW Wallbox Professional (DC).

Design-wise, the SUV moves to a cleaner Neue Klasse look with a slimmer illuminated kidney grille that references the original BMW 1500 from 1962.

The cabin is a bigger departure from the current BMW EV lineup. Instead of a conventional instrument cluster, the iX3 uses BMW Panoramic Vision, a full-width display placed below the windshield, alongside a 3D head-up display.

BMW has kept important physical controls in place, including the indicator stalk, gear selector, power windows and side mirror adjustment. Front air-conditioning vents are controlled through touchscreen gestures.

Practicality remains part of the package. As a five-seater SUV, the iX3 offers 520 litres of boot space, expandable to 1,750 litres with the rear seats folded. It also gets a 58-litre front storage compartment, or frunk, under the bonnet.

Malaysia pricing has not been announced, and the exact specification for the local market remains to be seen. Still, the 6 August unveiling will be an important one for BMW Malaysia, as it will show how the brand plans to position its next-generation EV technology in a market where premium electric SUVs are becoming increasingly competitive.
