14th-gen Nissan Skyline coming in December 2026, developed in half the time with AI

The legendary Nissan Skyline is set to make its return.

Nissan President and CEO Ivan Espinosa has confirmed that the 14th-generation Skyline is scheduled to make its global debut in December 2026, marking one of the most important launches in the company's ongoing revival plan.

From Nissan's earlier teaser images, the upcoming 14th-generation Skyline appears to take inspiration from past Skylines, including the sharp front-end styling of the Hakosuka Skyline, wider wheel arches and the familiar round taillight design that has become closely linked with the GT-R.

The new Skyline will continue to be built at Nissan's Tochigi Plant in Japan, the same facility responsible for building models such as the Fairlady Z.

AI helps cut development time

Interestingly, the new Skyline is also a showcase of how Nissan is changing the way it develops cars.

The company has introduced a new accelerated development process for the model, using generative AI and digital simulation tools throughout the design, engineering, testing and manufacturing stages.

According to Nissan, this has helped reduce the development timeline from around 55 months for the previous generation to just 26 months.

Ivan Espinosa said the project demonstrates Nissan's engineering capabilities and its ability to bring new vehicles to market more efficiently.

He also acknowledged that China's automotive industry has raised the bar in areas such as technology, cost efficiency and development speed.

For this project, Nissan has drawn experience from its partnership with Chinese joint-venture partner Dongfeng, particularly in adopting faster development methods and new approaches to vehicle technology.

The Skyline is not the only new model Nissan has introduced as part of its product renewal strategy.

In Japan, the company launched the new Kicks compact SUV in June, followed by the first full redesign of the Elgrand MPV in 16 years in July. Espinosa added that Nissan will continue bringing more new models to market in the future.

Rear-wheel drive expected

Nissan has not yet revealed full technical specifications for the new Skyline. However, the model is expected to retain a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) layout, staying true to the character that has defined the Skyline name for decades.

Powertrain details remain unconfirmed, but possibilities include a hybrid system, while some reports suggest Nissan could continue offering a version of its existing twin-turbocharged V6 engine producing more than 400 hp.

There are also expectations that the new Skyline could retain enthusiast-focused features such as a six-speed manual transmission and eventually join the expanding Nismo performance family.

With its global debut scheduled for December 2026, the next-generation Skyline will be closely watched by both long-time fans and a new generation of performance car enthusiasts.
