BMW shifts to 24-hour iX3 production at Debrecen plant to fill 100,000 European orders

Before anyone could even get behind the wheel in showrooms, 100,000 buyers in Europe had already put their money down. According to BMW, this marks an unprecedented order tally for any new model in its first year in the brand's history.

The car behind these numbers is the all-new BMW iX3, the first production model built on the Neue Klasse architecture.

Yet BMW's response is even more telling than the figures themselves: the Debrecen plant in Hungary commenced a three-shift roster in September this year, running iX3 production around the clock, 24 hours a day.

Just Eight Months

The Debrecen facility only began production of the iX3 in October 2025. While the second shift was originally slated for a later rollout, it was brought forward to February 2026. The third shift followed in September this year.

Plant Director Hans-Peter Kemser said that transitioning from initial production to full three-shift operations took just around eight months—the fastest production ramp-up ever recorded for a new BMW Group facility.

More than 5,000 employees were involved throughout this phase. While the plant's designed annual capacity ceiling stands at 150,000 units, the 50,000th iX3 had already rolled off the assembly line by July 2026.

The catalyst for the three-shift system is straightforward: an overwhelming order backlog.

The 100,000 European bookings represent confirmed orders with deposits paid or contracts signed, rather than mere registrations of interest.

Jochen Goller, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Customer, Brands and Sales, said that 100,000 orders mark a remarkably strong start for the Neue Klasse, with the rollout gaining rapid momentum.

Why the iX3 Has Struck Such a Chord

From a product standpoint, the core appeal of the iX3 lies in its EV powertrain and architecture: sixth-generation eDrive technology, an 800V electrical architecture, and a 108.7 kWh cylindrical-cell battery pack, delivering a maximum WLTP range of up to 805 km.

It supports DC fast charging at up to 400 kW, recouping up to 372 km of range in just 10 minutes.

In the 2026 premium all-electric SUV segment, these specifications place it firmly in the top tier.

However, what truly supercharged the order bank might be BMW's brand positioning: European buyers have shown far greater appetite for a serious, purpose-built EV from a traditional luxury marque than initially anticipated.

Since its debut, one in every three BMW EV orders in Europe has been for an iX3. Within the broader X3 model family, the fully electric variant already accounts for roughly half of all bookings.

In Malaysia

The iX3 officially launched in Malaysia on 6 August 2026, offered in a sole variant: the iX3 50 xDrive M Sport Pro. It is priced at RM378,800, or RM399,800 with the BMW Service & Repair Inclusive (BSRI) package.

Power comes from an all-wheel-drive dual-motor setup producing a combined 469 hp and 645 Nm, completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.9 seconds on to a top speed of 210 km/h.

With its 108.7 kWh battery, it delivers a WLTP-rated range of up to 805 km, while 22 kW AC charging replenishes the battery from 0 to 100% in around 5 hours and 30 minutes.

Malaysia's initial allocation was capped at just 50 units, all of which have completely sold out. While official bookings remain open, BMW Malaysia has yet to confirm a delivery timeline for subsequent batches.

A Detail Worth Noting

The current batch of iX3 models in Malaysia consists of standard-wheelbase units fully imported (CBU) from the Debrecen plant in Hungary. However, it's reported that once the initial 50-unit allocation clears, the sourcing strategy may shift.

Reports indicated that these Hungarian CBU units might serve as a stopgap measure ahead of the arrival of the China-built long-wheelbase iX3 L, hinting that the LWB model is already on the local roadmap.

BMW Malaysia has yet to reveal the official launch date, local specifications, or pricing for the iX3 L. If you are not in an immediate rush, waiting for the long-wheelbase version could be a sensible move.

The LWB model will offer significantly enhanced rear legroom, while duty structures on China-sourced imports could potentially allow for more competitive pricing.

Is It Worth the Wait?

The positioning of the iX3 is clear-cut: it represents BMW's most comprehensive technological leap in the EV space to date. Features like the 800V architecture, 400 kW DC fast charging, and an 805 km WLTP range are substantial generational upgrades, not mere facelift tweaks.

The initial 50-unit allocation reflects BMW's cautious initial approach to the local market, but the swift sell-out underscores genuine market demand.

If you want to experience the Neue Klasse immediately, the subsequent batches of Hungarian-built standard-wheelbase units remain your only avenue. If you have the luxury of time, the China-made long-wheelbase version is certainly worth waiting for.

What remains certain is that the Debrecen plant will continue running at full steam on three shifts; with orders piling up and lines running at capacity, your delivery date will simply come down to your place in the queue.
