Social media is abuzz with photos and videos of a black Chery Omoda 5 stranded in the middle of a highway, with its rear axle allegedly detached from the vehicle’s chassis.
Per on-ground reports, the incident took place earlier today (Tuesday, 6 October 2026), in Tebrau, Johor Bahru. No injuries were reported.
Today’s incident looks similar to one that happened back in April 2024, involving a grey Chery Omoda 5.
In the wake of the 2024 incident, Chery released a media statement confirming the issue was an “isolated” occurrence. As a result, Chery recalled 600 cars with parts made between August 14 and 17, 2023.
In a statement by Chery Auto Malaysia VP Lee Wen Hsiang in May 2024, the root cause of the 2024 incident was identified to be a miscalibration of welding equipment at a vendor.
Chery has yet to release a statement on the latest incident. More to come as we have it.
