Geely EX5 updated in China: RWD, 800V, LiDAR, 6C charging – could Proton eMas 7 go RWD?

The Geely EX5 is getting an update in China, with an 800V platform, 6C charging and a roof-mounted LiDAR joining the package. This time, the changes cover the platform, electric powertrain, chassis and driver-assistance hardware.

The updated EX5 is confirmed to launch in China on 23 September. As the EX5 has a close connection with the Proton eMas 7, what Geely is doing with the new model is certainly worth watching. 

The new Geely EX5 will use a 800V high-voltage platform, with a peak charging rate of up to 6C. Geely is also expected to add its AI smart charging technology and the next-generation Aegis Short Blade Battery to improve charging performance and range.

The more interesting change is underneath the car. The updated EX5 turns to an electric rear-wheel-drive platform, paired with Geely's Thunder 16-in-1 intelligent electric drive system. The rear suspension is now a five-link independent setup, and CDC continuously variable dampers have also been added.

The new EX5 also gets a roof-mounted LiDAR for the first time. It is paired with Geely's latest G-ASD H5 driver-assistance system, giving the SUV a new set of sensors and hardware for assisted driving.

Geely will reveal the full specifications and technical details when the new EX5 launches on 23 September.

For now, there is no word on whether these upgrades will make their way to the Proton eMas 7. But with the EX5 moving to rear-wheel drive and 800V, there could be some interesting changes for its Proton counterpart.
