Leapmotor has launched the new A05 in China, with prices starting at RMB 63,900 (around RM 40k). The small electric hatchback could be an interesting addition to the Malaysian market, particularly as Leapmotor already assembles vehicles at its plant in Kulim.
If the A05 were eventually brought in through CKD assembly, its low price could put it up against models such as the Proton eMas 5.

The Leapmotor A05 follows the brand's minimalist design approach, with distinctive "smiling" light clusters and a floating roof. It measures 4,200 mm long and has a 2,605 mm wheelbase.

For daily city driving, the A05 also makes good use of its compact dimensions.
The seats can be configured in several ways, including dedicated Nap and Bed modes, while there are 33 storage compartments throughout the cabin. A two-level boot adds further flexibility for everyday use.

That gives the A05 enough room for the usual school runs and daily commuting, while also leaving some room for a weekend trip.

Despite its entry-level positioning, the A05 gets a fairly comprehensive cabin setup.

It uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8295 chip, along with an 8.88-inch instrument display and a 14.6-inch central touchscreen.

One of its highlights is an immersive audio system aimed at younger buyers, including a karaoke function that can be used without microphones.

There are also 256-colour ambient lighting and soft-touch materials in several areas of the cabin, giving the interior a more upmarket feel.

The Leapmotor A05 is offered with either a 70 kW or 90 kW electric motor, and buyers can choose between claimed ranges of 405 km and 510 km.
For Malaysian drivers using the car mainly for commuting around Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding areas, the 510 km version should provide enough range for several days of regular driving before needing a charge.

Leapmotor has not confirmed whether the A05 will come to Malaysia. The brand currently has two models on sale here:
If Leapmotor does bring the A05 to Malaysia at a competitive price, it would add another option to the country's small EV segment. With its compact size, smart features and flexible cabin, the A05 could offer something different to local buyers.
