Spied: Nissan's new boxy SUV reveals rugged design and tailgate spare wheel

Nissan seems to be working on a new rugged SUV, and our latest spy shots may have just given us a first look at what could be the next-generation Paladin.

There is no shortage of clues at the back. The boxy body, roof rails and, most importantly, the externally mounted spare wheel all point towards a proper off-roader rather than another urban SUV.

The prototype is still heavily camouflaged, but its proportions are already quite clear. The rear is tall and upright, with vertically stacked tail-lights, a chunky bumper and a spare wheel mounted on the tailgate.

From the details visible so far, the new SUV is expected to use a ladder-frame chassis, with generous ground clearance and side steps for better off-road capability.
