Volvo plans 13 new models by 2030, tailored to different markets

Volvo has announced the biggest product launch programme in its history, with 13 new models planned for global markets by the end of 2030. Six of the 13 models will be built specifically for China and other Asian markets, while the other seven will be aimed at Europe, the US and other Western markets.

Seven new models for Western markets

Volvo plans to introduce seven locally produced models for Western markets. The lineup will include fully electric vehicles and third-generation hybrids.

These models will use Volvo's own HuginCore central computing platform, with the same underlying electronic and software architecture.

Six new models for Asia

The other six models will be developed for China and other Asian markets, with Volvo making greater use of technology and components from Geely.

Sharing platforms and components with Geely will enable Volvo to cut development and launch times, while also making production more efficient.

The company says the locally developed cars will also be better suited to demand for smart cockpits and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in these markets.

Different strategies in different regions

Volvo says the different line-ups are intended to account for local regulations and driving habits, as well as what customers in each market expect from their cars.

In Western markets, the company will continue with its own HuginCore technology, giving the company greater control over its technology in Europe and North America.

The Asian-market models will make use of Geely's technology and supply chain, helping it bring products to market faster and respond more quickly to local demand.

According to Volvo, all 13 models will be locally produced. The approach will make sure that the vehicles are built closer to their target markets, while also shortening the distance between production and delivery.

For Volvo, this means moving away from a single global product strategy. Future models will instead be developed with their individual markets in mind, with different platforms, technology and powertrain solutions used where appropriate.
