Model Overview

The Vala is a fully electric camper van jointly developed by Beijing Automobile Works (BAW) and Wuyi Automotive Technology. Officially badged the "Freedom Kingdom vala", it made its market debut in 2024 as a versatile electric vehicle designed for both urban commutes and outdoor getaways. Built on BAW's electric large MPV platform, the Ruasheng Wangpai EM7, the camper features a pop-up roof mechanism and a single sliding side door, targeting young families and adventure seekers seeking flexible cabin space. In December 2024, BAW rolled out the 2025 Freedom Kingdom vala EV Pro with an official retail price of RM268,000—a RM20,000 increase over the 2024 model, bringing key powertrain and range upgrades. The 2025 line-up offers two variants: the 380km RWD and the 505km RWD, spanning a price bracket from roughly RM248,000 to RM268,000. Blurring the lines between conventional MPVs and motorhomes, it blends retro styling, modular interiors, and zero-emission electric drive.
Design Language
The Vala’s styling combines retro aesthetics with a rugged, squared-off profile. Up front, it sports a flat fascia with a rectangular blacked-out mesh grille and retro round headlamps framed by chrome accents for a standout visual signature. Circular LED daytime running lights with chrome surrounds add a touch of sophistication whilst significantly boosting night-time road presence. A clean-cut front bumper completes its distinct design character.
Along the flanks, it retains classic MPV practicality with a single sliding door on the right-hand side, well suited to urban pick-ups and tight parking spots. A chiselled shoulder line and lower rocker indentations add character to the slab-sided body. In terms of dimensions, the vehicle measures 5,240 mm long, 1,870 mm wide, and 2,070 mm tall, riding on a generous 3,200 mm wheelbase that firmly places it in the large MPV category. Its 2,070 mm overall height, combined with the pop-up roof deployed, significantly expands vertical headroom for stationary camping. At the rear, the minimalist theme continues with an upward-lifting tailgate for hassle-free loading of bulky gear, adorned with the "Freedom Kingdom" emblem and the vala script. Outset tail lamp clusters improve night visibility while complementing the boxy silhouette.
Inside, the Vala revolves around a "versatile space" philosophy, sporting warm off-white tones paired with wood-finish flooring. The cabin adopts a 2+2 four-seater arrangement mounted on floor sliding tracks for versatile adjustments. Both backrests and squabs fold fully flat into a bed configuration, which, paired with the front pop-up roof, creates a practical two-tier living space when camped.
Powertrain and Performance
The Vala is offered in two powertrain options: the 380km RWD and the 505km RWD (Pro), both driven by a single rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous electric motor.
380km RWD Version: The rear motor outputs a maximum power of 90 kW (approx. 122 PS) and a peak torque of 270 Nm, with a top speed of 110 km/h. It draws power from a 65 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack supplied by Gotion High-tech, delivering a CLTC pure electric range of 380 km.
505km RWD Version (Pro Version): The motor produces a higher 170 kW (approx. 231 PS) and 310 Nm of torque, pushing top speed to 130 km/h. Energy is supplied by an 81 kWh LFP battery from EVE Energy, yielding a CLTC pure electric range of 505 km. Official 0-100 km/h sprint times have not been published. On DC fast charging, the 380km variant juices from 0 to 80% in 60 minutes, while the 505km variant takes 50 minutes for a 20 to 90% top-up. AC slow charging takes 8 hours and 9.2 hours respectively. Both variants come standard with AC/DC charging capabilities and support 5.2 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) reverse power output to run campsite appliances with ease.
Chassis and Handling
The Vala is engineered with a monocoque chassis in a rear-motor, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration. Suspension is handled by front MacPherson struts and a heavy-duty leaf spring non-independent rear axle. This rear setup prioritises payload capacity and structural robustness, balancing everyday urban ride compliance with the ability to take on rough unpaved roads during outdoor camping excursions. Braking duties are handled by ventilated discs up front and solid discs at the rear, paired with an electronic parking brake (EPB). It rides on 215/60 R17 tyres, offering a minimum laden ground clearance of 150 mm.
Cabin and Equipment
Cabin modularity and outdoor liveability take centre stage in the Vala. Its 2+2 four-seater layout features four fully adjustable and fold-flat seats that transform into an onboard bed. When the pop-up roof is raised, the interior vertical height expands substantially to accommodate multiple occupants for rest.
The centre section incorporates an integrated worktop suitable for dining, remote working, and leisure. The surrounding area can be custom-fitted with storage cabinets, a mini-fridge, and a TV screen, while the open space opposite can host a sofa and lounge mattress, effectively creating a "mobile living room". Basic living amenities include a washbasin and faucet. Faux-wood flooring is fitted throughout, lending the cabin a warm, homey ambiance.
Safety and Driver Assistance
On the safety front, the Vala comes equipped with core active safety systems including Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), alongside a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). Selected higher-spec trims offer an optional 360-degree surround-view camera. Mechanically, its underlying architecture is derived from the established Ruasheng Wangpai EM7 platform, providing sound baseline crash protection. Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) rated at Level 2 or above are absent, with the vehicle focusing purely on essential driving functions.
For battery safety, the vehicle relies on durable LFP chemistry supplied by Gotion High-tech or EVE Energy, managed by an integrated thermal and charging management system to ensure safe operation during both fast and slow charging cycles.
Market Overview and Verdict
Serving as BAW's strategic entry into the niche electric camper van market, the Vala has generated keen interest among outdoor enthusiasts and the custom camper scene. Its retro design, elevating roof, and highly adaptable interior give it a distinct edge in a specialised market segment. Key rivals include the SAIC Maxus EV90 Camping Edition and bespoke Ford Transit EV conversions. Priced between RM248,000 and RM268,000, the Vala sits in the mid-tier price range of the electric camper category.
Market feedback highlights several strong suits: its head-turning retro styling offers high visual appeal; the pop-up roof and fold-flat seating maximise interior volume for couples or small families; and the zero-emission electric powertrain with V2L functionality seamlessly caters to off-grid camping power needs. On the flip side, its niche lifestyle positioning limits broad mainstream appeal; BAW’s brand equity and aftersales support network trail behind mainstream competitors; and being built on a commercial MPV platform, its overall NVH suppression, driving refinement, and smart cockpit features remain fairly rudimentary. In summary, as a multi-purpose electric camper built for daily commuting, weekend camping, and road trips, the Vala neatly taps into the growing bespoke lifestyle market, though sustained commercial success will depend on wider brand recognition and long-term market acceptance.
