The Baojun 530 is a front-engine front-wheel drive compact SUV launched by SAIC-GM-Wuling.

Leveraging a global badge-engineering strategy, this series transcends its initial positioning as a localized utility vehicle to become one of the most iconic global benchmarks in the history of China's automotive industry.

Model Overview

The Baojun 530 is positioned as a home-use compact SUV, offering multiple space combinations such as 5-seat, 6-seat (2+2+2 layout), and 7-seat (2+3+2 layout).

In the international automotive market, this series has been given the historical label of a "representative global Badge Engineering car". Its core appeal lies in its class-transcending mid-size SUV cabin space, versatile seating configurations, durable mechanical engineering, and exceptional adaptability across multiple global brands. In the Chinese market, it mainly attracts pragmatic families pursuing large space and economy; while in the global landscape, it meets the diverse expectations of emerging markets for mid-size family cars.

Development History

The birth of the Baojun 530 aimed to take over the market share of the former sales pillar Baojun 560 and integrate a more modern family design.

The series debuted at the 2017 Guangzhou Auto Show and was officially launched in March 2018. Due to adopting the "Parallel Dynamic" future-facing front design inherited from the Baojun 510, the vehicle quickly gained high market attention at the beginning of its launch. In 2019, the series underwent a mid-term facelift, replacing the early dual-clutch (DCT) and mechanical automatic transmission (AMT) with a CVT continuously variable transmission capable of simulating 8 speeds.

Compared to the domestic conventional lifecycle, the most important milestone of the Baojun 530 lies in its extensive export evolution.

Starting from the end of 2018, relying on the global channels of General Motors and SAIC Group, the Baojun 530 embarked on a "one car, four badges" global journey:

In Southeast Asian markets such as Indonesia and Brunei, the badge was changed and renamed Wuling Almaz (Wuling Almaz);

In the Indian market, it hung the MG badge under SAIC and was renamed MG Hector;

In dozens of emerging markets in South America (such as Colombia, Chile, Mexico) and the Middle East, the badge was changed and renamed the second-generation Chevrolet Captiva (Chevrolet Captiva).

With SAIC-GM-Wuling fully transitioning to the Wuling Silver Badge series and new energy direction in the domestic market, the Baojun 530 pure fuel series has completed its historical mission in the local market, gradually transferring the business focus completely to global export and overseas local assembly (CKD) business.

Market Performance

In China, the Baojun 530 achieved an annual sales breakthrough of 110,000 units during its peak in 2018 and 2019.

However, what truly gives it a unique position in the industry is its performance in the overseas market. As of 2026 trace data shows, the cumulative overseas sales and CKD export kit total of the Baojun 530 as a global car have steadily crossed the hundreds of thousands mark.

Among them, in the Indian market, the renamed MG Hector has long occupied the top of the local mid-size SUV niche; in Indonesia, Wuling Almaz has become a representative product of Chinese brands in the local tech home-use SUV field; and in the Latin American market, Chevrolet Captiva also continues to maintain a stable market share, showing extremely strong global channel capabilities.

Core Technology

In terms of body dimensions, the Baojun 530 adopted a rectangular outline that maximizes cabin space utilization, with length, width, and height of 4690 mm, 1835 mm, 1750 mm, and wheelbase reaching 2750 mm.

This wheelbase gives it rear knee space close to mid-size SUVs in the compact SUV camp, thus able to easily accommodate three rows of seats.

In terms of powertrain and chassis tuning, all generations and global derivative versions mainly adopt the following architecture:

Engine: The series is core-equipped with a 1.5-liter (code LJO) inline four-cylinder turbocharged engine independently developed by SAIC-GM-Wuling.

The engine uses low inertia turbo technology, with a maximum power output of 108 kW (about 147 horsepower) and a maximum torque of 250 Nm.

Transmission: Matches a CVT continuously variable transmission that can simulate 8 speeds; some overseas entry-level or specific condition versions match a 6-speed manual transmission (6MT). Its combined fuel consumption per 100 km is maintained between 6.7L to 7.5L depending on the curb weight (1435 kg to 1541 kg).

Chassis Structure: The vehicle uniformly adopts front-engine front-wheel drive (FWD) layout, suspension system is front MacPherson independent suspension, rear torsion beam non-independent suspension (some overseas high-spec models or early versions adjusted anti-roll bar and bushing stiffness for specific markets).

In terms of digital configuration, mid-to-late versions of the series pioneered in introducing a 10.4-inch vertical floating touchscreen in China, integrating an intelligent network system driven by mobile computing power.

Overseas versions such as Wuling Almaz are equipped with a unique WIND (Wuling Indonesian Command) Indonesian language smart voice interaction system, which is also the first smart cockpit in the local market supporting native language vehicle control.

Future Plans

Due to the global fuel vehicle compliance access environment (such as European and some Asian market regulation updates) and the evolution of the parent company's product strategy, the Baojun 530 pure fuel platform is no longer undergoing significant technical iterations targeting the local market.

The future core planning of the Wuling and Baojun brands is to hand over the space ecology and international landscape of this sub-market comprehensively to the new generation hybrid platform (such as Wuling Star HEV/PHEV, Baojun Yunhai, etc.) and the latest global silver badge models to inherit, thereby continuing the market share and brand reputation built by this series in overseas emerging markets through hybrid technology and high-level intelligent solutions.
