Bitauto is a leading automotive internet enterprise in China, founded in 2000 and headquartered in Beijing. Initially established as an automotive news and car-buying guide portal, its operations now encompass the complete ownership lifecycle—from vehicle research and purchasing to aftersales care and trade-ins—making it one of the most influential platforms in China's automotive digital space. In November 2020, Bitauto completed its privatisation to officially become part of the Tencent Group, subsequently integrating closely with Tencent to build the collaborative "Tengyi Ecosystem".
Bitauto was founded in June 2000 by William Li (Li Bin), founder of NIO, standing as one of China's earliest automotive portals. In November 2010, Bitauto listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: BITA), marking it as the first Chinese automotive internet enterprise to go public in the United States.
In 2015, Bitauto entered into a strategic partnership with JD.com and Tencent, wherein JD.com invested approximately USD 1.55 billion in cash and exclusive resources for an equity stake, alongside co-investment from Tencent. In November 2020, Bitauto concluded a privatisation deal with a buyer consortium comprising Tencent Holdings and Hammer Capital, officially delisting from the NYSE to join Tencent. Since then, Bitauto and Tencent have deepened their integration through successive phases—from initial "Teng + Yi" cooperation to ecosystem-wide collaboration—before comprehensively upgrading to "Tengyi Technology" in 2024 to establish the "Tengyi Ecosystem" synergy framework.
Bitauto operates a comprehensive product portfolio, with key business divisions comprising:
Bitauto App is an integrated automotive platform combining car news, pricing information, owner communities, and car services. It offers varied content including expert vehicle reviews, original programmes, live streams, and short video clips, while aggregating car care and maintenance services such as car washes, refuelling, EV charging, and window tinting.
Bitauto Car Quotation App is China’s premier car-buying guide application, covering 11,000 vehicle variants in partnership with over 20,000 dealerships. Bitauto Partner is an all-in-one digital management platform for automotive dealerships. Following its privatisation, synergy between Bitauto and Tencent has continued to strengthen. Tencent opened up its full suite of resources to Bitauto, seamlessly embedding its motoring content, model database, dealer network, and vertical search algorithms across WeChat, Channels, and the wider Tencent ecosystem. Bitauto CEO Zhang Xuan noted that the Tengyi collaboration has progressed from initial trials and broad cooperation into a stage of deep operational integration.
Under the Tengyi ecosystem, Bitauto continues to cultivate specialised automotive media content; Chuangyi Media spearheads new media initiatives including short-form video and live streaming; and Yihui Intelligence leads the AI technology division, deploying large AI Agent models to provide scenario-tailored solutions for automotive industry clients. Both parties also collaborate commercially on WeChat Channels to deliver professional video marketing solutions for clients.
Bitauto’s key executive leadership consists of Chief Executive Officer Zhang Xuan, Chief Operating Officer Zhao Yongxin, Chief Financial Officer Zhang Zhe, and Chief Technology Officer Jia Zhifeng.
