C-V2X (Cellular-Vehicle-to-Everything) is an advanced vehicle-to-everything cooperative technology that utilises cellular mobile networks (such as 4G, 5G, and subsequent evolutions) to enable wireless data communication between vehicles and their surrounding environment. This technology allows vehicles to communicate in real time with pedestrians (V2P), other vehicles (V2V), roadside infrastructure (V2I), and cloud networks (V2N). Compared to conventional short-range communication technologies, C-V2X offers core advantages such as non-line-of-sight perception, ultra-low transmission latency, and exceptional reliability, serving as a critical technological foundation for advanced autonomous driving and intelligent road safety.
The technical architecture of C-V2X is primarily built upon two core transmission modes—cellular network communications (Uu interface) and direct communications (PC5 interface)—alongside roadside edge computing units.
Dual-Mode Communication Architecture & Direct Communication Mechanism:
C-V2X incorporates two complementary communication links. The cellular base station-based Uu interface connects to cloud servers to retrieve wide-area real-time traffic updates, high-definition (HD) maps, and remote cloud dispatch information. Meanwhile, the PC5 interface, operating on dedicated spectrum (such as ITS bands), facilitates direct point-to-point communication between vehicles, as well as between vehicles and roadside units. Even in tunnels or remote rural areas without cellular network coverage, the PC5 direct mode operates independently to deliver millisecond-level collision warnings.
Cooperative Perception & Dynamic Risk Early Warning:
Via on-board C-V2X terminals, vehicles broadcast their real-time telemetry (such as coordinates, vehicle speed, driving trajectory, and emergency braking triggers) dozens of times per second. Surrounding vehicles and roadside perception systems (such as cameras and radar sensors integrated with Roadside Units, or RSUs) capture and process these data streams. This enables vehicles to detect hazards beyond physical line of sight (such as obstructions by heavy vehicles ahead, sudden pedestrian dash-outs from blind spots, and red-light-running vehicles at blind junctions), providing timely collision warnings or triggering Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) seconds before an impending impact.
Prohibiting Blind Reliance on C-V2X for Hands-Free Driving or Ignoring Physical Blind Spots:
While C-V2X significantly extends a vehicle's perceptual range and predictive warning capability, wireless links can still suffer from physical obstructions, network congestion, or cellular dead zones. Drivers are strictly prohibited from operating vehicles completely hands-free where not permitted by autonomous driving regulations, and must never speed blindly through blind junctions simply because a V2X warning system is active.
Prohibiting Unauthorised Tampering, Falsification, or Interference with C-V2X Broadcast Authentication and Encrypted Data:
C-V2X handles critical traffic safety data broadcasts, necessitating stringent digital certificate authentication and data encryption protocols (V2X PKI security framework). It is strictly prohibited for any party or individual to use cryptographic exploit tools, signal boosters, or rogue data injection devices to transmit fabricated vehicle coordinates or false collision alerts. Any tampering with or falsification of connected vehicle data severely disrupts public traffic operations and poses high risks of triggering catastrophic multi-vehicle pile-ups.
