CMA Architecture

2026-10-17 13:40:00

The CMA architecture, short for "Compact Modular Architecture", is a modular vehicle development framework geared towards global Industry 4.0, spearheaded by Volvo and jointly developed with Geely.

It differs fundamentally from the traditional concept of a "platform": while a platform is primarily a physical concept focused on parts sharing, an architecture is an end-to-end ecosystem spanning R&D, design, manufacturing, procurement, engineering processes, and the supply chain. The objective of this system is not merely to cut costs, but to fundamentally elevate vehicle performance, safety, and build quality.

🚀 Core Advantages

The CMA architecture sets uncompromising benchmarks across several core dimensions:

  • Safety Performance: Inheriting Volvo's renowned safety DNA, the CMA body structure meets and exceeds crash safety standards set by China's C-NCAP, Euro NCAP, and the US IIHS. For instance, its frontal 40% offset crash test speed is 12.5% higher than US and European regulatory standards.

  • Reliability: Key powertrain components such as the engine and transmission are engineered for a design service life of 350,000 km—a 46% improvement over the typical 240,000 km benchmark of European, American, Japanese, and Korean engines. Rig and bench durability test durations also significantly surpass international standards.

  • Craftsmanship and Build Quality: Premium-class manufacturing standards are implemented. For example, stamped panel exterior R-angle precision reaches 1.5 mm (against the industry benchmark of 2.5–3.0 mm), with stamping tolerances tightly controlled to 0.2 mm (industry average is roughly 0.5 mm), delivering a sharper, more refined body finish.

  • Electrical and Electronic (E/E) Architecture: This represents a key competitive edge for CMA over older vehicle platforms. Its central bus system utilises FlexRay technology, offering 10 times the bandwidth and 20 times the transmission speed of conventional CAN bus networks, providing ample redundancy for advanced connected services and autonomous driving capabilities.

🧩 Architectural Characteristics

  • High Flexibility: Accommodates the development of diverse models across the A-segment and B-segment, featuring adaptable wheelbase, track width, and front and rear overhangs.

  • Powertrain Versatility: Fully compatible with various powertrain configurations, including conventional petrol, BSG mild hybrid, full hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and all-electric (BEV) setups.

🚗 Key Applications

The CMA architecture underpins nearly 20 models across four marques—Volvo, Lynk & Co, Geely, and Polestar—including the Volvo XC40, Lynk & Co 01/02/03/05, Geely Xingyue, and Polestar 2. As of 2024, cumulative global sales of CMA-based vehicles have surpassed 600,000 units, with an average retail price topping RM170,000.

The CMA architecture serves not only as the technological cornerstone propelling Geely from its "Refined Car 3.0 Era" into the "Tech Geely 4.0 Era", but also as its primary weapon to take on world-class architectures like Toyota's TNGA on the global stage. Its inception stands as the defining milestone of the strategic synergy between Geely and Volvo.
