Model Overview

The Dongfeng Mengshi MS600 is a high-performance off-road vehicle developed by Dongfeng Off-Road Vehicle Co., Ltd., officially launched on 18 February 2023 at Shougang Park in Beijing. As Dongfeng Mengshi's second civilian offering following the Mengshi Retrograde 500, the MS600 is positioned as a multi-purpose emergency off-road platform, catering to specialised applications such as emergency rescue, police command, and geological exploration, alongside the hardcore off-road enthusiast market. Four variants are available: Single-Cab Chassis Standard (RM486,800), Single-Cab Chassis Flagship (RM608,800), Double-Cab Chassis Standard (RM516,800), and Double-Cab Chassis Flagship (RM638,800). Sold in chassis cab form, the platform allows buyers to customise the vehicle into a pick-up truck, SUV, or various specialised utility vehicles based on specific requirements.

Design Language

In terms of styling, the Dongfeng Mengshi MS600 retains the rugged, heavy-duty DNA of Mengshi military vehicles while incorporating civilian-oriented refinements. Up front, it features a massive inverted trapezoidal grille with blacked-out horizontal slats, flanked by the Chinese "Mengshi" badge and the Dongfeng emblem at the centre. A split headlight setup is employed, pairing circular primary light units with sleek daytime running light (DRL) strips aligned seamlessly with the grille. The front bumper houses a prominent silver skid plate, with an electric winch fitted as standard on selected variants. Two body configurations are on offer: short rear overhang and long rear overhang. Dimensions for the short rear overhang measure 5,850 mm (6,060 mm with winch) in length, 2,160 mm in width, and 2,155 mm in height, while the long rear overhang measures 5,970 mm (6,180 mm with winch) by 2,160 mm by 2,155 mm, both sharing a 3,700 mm wheelbase. Inside, the cabin features a dual-tone dashboard, a large central touchscreen, and a full digital instrument cluster, with a walkthrough front row layout offering an expansive transverse shoulder room of over 1.7 metres.

Powertrain and Performance

The Dongfeng Mengshi MS600 is powered by a Dongfeng Cummins D6.7NS6B320 6.7-litre inline-six turbodiesel engine. This powertrain churns out a maximum power of 231 kW (314 PS) and a massive peak torque of 1,050 Nm. Power is channelled through a 6-speed automatic transmission and a 4-speed transfer case, complete with a central differential lock. Through a four-stage reduction gear train, it delivers an astonishing wheel-end torque of 20,000 Nm. Top speed is rated at over 140 km/h. Designed to run on Euro-standard diesel, it comes with a generous 140-litre fuel tank. Crucially, the engine is capable of cold-starting at temperatures as low as -41°C, demonstrating exceptional operational resilience. Real-world fuel consumption is rated at around 13 to 15 litres per 100 km.

Chassis and Handling

The chassis represents the core engineering highlight of the Mengshi MS600. Built on a robust ladder-frame non-monocoque chassis, the vehicle employs a front-engine, full-time four-wheel drive (4WD) layout. Suspension duties are handled by the TPS-2 high-performance independent setup derived from third-generation Dongfeng Mengshi military hardware, featuring double wishbones with stabiliser bars and thrust rods at both front and rear axles. Ground clearance stands at an impressive 340 mm, complemented by an approach angle of 32 to 33 degrees, a departure angle of 30 to 36 degrees, a water wading depth exceeding 850 mm, a vertical obstacle climbing ability of over 400 mm, and a trench crossing capability exceeding 700 mm. It rides on 295/65 R20 tyres. The Single-Cab Chassis has a kerb weight of 3,750 kg with a payload capacity exceeding 2,000 kg, whereas the Double-Cab Chassis weighs in at 3,915 kg. The minimum turning radius is 8.25 metres.

Cabin and Features

Inside the cabin, the Mengshi MS600 is equipped with a 12.8-inch floating infotainment touchscreen running an intelligent assistant system capable of displaying heading, altitude, and real-time vehicle pitch and roll angles. A row of tactile physical switches and an electronic gear selector are neatly arranged beneath the centre console. Seating comfort is provided by dual-density, wraparound ergonomic seats. Single-Cab models adopt a 3-seater front bench layout, while Double-Cab models feature a 6-seater arrangement, with an optional 5-seater configuration available. Equipment-wise, the Single-Cab chassis comes with a 360-degree camera, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Pedestrian Collision Warning, night vision system, and an electric winch; the Double-Cab chassis adds Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), with leatherette upholstery and a wireless charging pad available as options. Customers can also opt for various factory add-ons, including specialised tyres, dual alternators, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), and fuel pre-heating systems.

Safety and Driver Assistance

On the safety front, the Mengshi MS600 offers optional Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and a Level 2 ADAS suite, incorporating Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, and Pedestrian Collision Warning. The integration of an infrared night vision system further enhances nocturnal driving safety. In terms of passive safety, the heavy-duty ladder-frame architecture and military-grade platform deliver uncompromised structural rigidity. It is worth noting that active electronic driver aids are relatively minimalist, demanding a higher degree of off-road driving proficiency from the driver.

Market Performance and Reception

Backed by proven military pedigree, the Dongfeng Mengshi MS600 has garnered significant interest across specialised commercial sectors since its debut. Its chassis platform has been adopted for customised armoured carriers, expedition motorhomes, and special-purpose conversions, with exports reaching the Americas market. Industry reviews and owners have praised the surging low-end grunt from its 6.7-litre turbodiesel mill, the go-anywhere capability of the military-grade chassis, and the extraordinary terrain clearance afforded by its 340 mm ride height. Extensive testing confirms reliable operation even in sub-zero extremes of -41°C. Conversely, some observe that its front-end styling polarises opinions, with traditionalists feeling it strays somewhat from the iconic Mengshi military look; its substantial 2.16-metre overall width also demands extra caution when negotiating tight urban roads; furthermore, striking the right balance between rugged military utility and civilian ride comfort remains an ongoing refinement process. On the whole, by leveraging its core proposition of "military-grade engineering adapted for civilian use", powered by a 6.7T turbodiesel engine, TPS-2 independent suspension, full-time 4WD, and extreme obstacle clearance, the Dongfeng Mengshi MS600 holds an exclusive and virtually irreplaceable niche in the premium hardcore 4x4 landscape.
