Model Overview

The Ford Territory is a mid-size SUV from JMC Ford, known globally as the Territory. Making its debut in 2022, it is positioned as a "wide-body, spacious 5-seater" family SUV. The 2025 iteration currently on sale in China hit the market in October 2024, followed by an entry-level "Xindong Edition" introduced in March 2026. The full line-up comprises six variants, with recommended retail pricing ranging from RM98,800 to RM165,500. Among them, the entry-level Xindong Edition carries an official sticker price of RM98,800 (dropping to around RM83,800 after national subsidies), while the range-topping Zunling PLUS retails at RM165,500. Targeted at the RM100,000 to RM150,000 joint-venture SUV segment, its chief rivals include similarly priced contenders such as the Toyota Frontlander and Volkswagen Tharu.

Design Language

The 2025 Territory embraces a leisure-inspired "resort style" design language. Up front, it sports a full-width obsidian black front grille with a matrix-style octagonal mesh insert, complemented by distinctive L-shaped "star-shine" LED headlights. The profile presents a rugged, clean-cut silhouette accented by matte silver rocker panel trims, while the rear features symmetrical L-shaped LED tail lamps with smoked housings and integrated three-tier light elements. Buyers can choose from seven exterior colours, including two earth-tone options: Wilderness Green and Cactus Grey.

In terms of dimensions, the SUV measures 4,685 mm in length, 1,935 mm in width, and 1,706 mm in height, riding on a 2,726 mm wheelbase. Its generous 1,935 mm width stands out in the segment, working alongside a flat rear floor to deliver generous rear shoulder and hip room. Inside, the cabin adopts a "Hi Wrap-around Cockpit" layout, featuring a twin 12.3-inch screen setup—combining a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment display—as standard across the range. Gear shifting is handled via a modern rotary electronic dial.

Powertrain and Performance

Across the range, the Territory is powered by an EcoBoost 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine churning out 125 kW (170 PS) and 260 Nm of peak torque. Power is transferred via a Magna-sourced 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Configured purely as a front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FWD) model, it achieves a top speed of 180 km/h. Combined fuel consumption is rated at 7.5 L/100 km on the WLTC cycle, with the engine capable of running on RON 92 petrol. The powertrain calibration focuses on smooth delivery with gentle low-end response, making it well suited for day-to-day family commutes.

Additionally, the Territory is available with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain pairing a 1.5T engine with an electric motor, providing up to 115 km of pure electric range on the CLTC cycle and an impressive total range of up to 1,324 km.

Chassis and Handling

The Territory rides on front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent suspension setup. The fitment of an independent rear suspension represents a relatively premium spec among joint-venture SUVs at this price tier. To sharpen suspension responsiveness, engineers utilised aluminium steering knuckles to reduce unsprung weight. Tuned to Ford's global chassis standards, it strikes a fine balance between rough-road compliance and ride comfort. Steering response is well-weighted and offers decent precision. Built on a monocoque chassis, high-strength steel accounts for 65.4% of the body structure, with hot-stamped steel making up 14.4%, yielding a torsional rigidity of 16,659 Nm/deg.

Cabin and Equipment

The smart cockpit serves as a core highlight of the Territory. The entire range comes standard with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor. The infotainment unit runs on Tencent's TAI+ intelligent ecosystem, supporting onboard apps like WeChat for Auto and QQ Music. Smartphone connectivity covers Apple CarPlay, Huawei HiCar, and Baidu CarLife. The dual 12.3-inch connected screen layout is standard across the board. Higher-spec variants add perks like wireless smartphone charging as well as heated and ventilated front seats. Boot capacity stands at 448 litres under normal conditions, expandable to 1,422 litres with the rear seats folded down.

Safety and Driver Assistance

On the passive safety front, high-stress areas of the Territory's chassis incorporate 1,500 MPa ultra-high-strength boron steel, complemented by six standard airbags across the range. Active safety is comprehensive, with mid-to-high variants packing the Ford Co-Pilot360 Level 2 advanced driver assistance system (ADAS). The sensor suite comprises 12 ultrasonic sensors, 4 high-definition surround-view cameras, 3 millimetre-wave radars, and a monocular front-facing camera. Key functions include Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (0–180 km/h), Lane Keeping Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Change Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, Auto Parking Assist, and a 50-metre Reverse Tracking Assist. Range-topping trims also feature a 360-degree surround-view camera with a transparent chassis view.

Market Performance and Verdict

Leveraging its segment-topping 1,935 mm width, standard Snapdragon 8155 chip, and Level 2 ADAS suite as key selling propositions, the Territory establishes a distinct competitive edge in the RM100,000 to RM150,000 joint-venture SUV arena. Its value-for-money quotient is undeniable, even if brand equity still trails staple rivals like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Within the line-up, the entry-level Xindong Edition makes ownership more accessible in the RM80,000 price band despite a trimmed equipment list, whereas mid-to-high variants deliver a substantially more generous kit list. JMC Ford also backs the SUV with a lifetime warranty on core engine and gearbox components for the first registered owner. As a strategic model for JMC Ford in the mainstream family SUV segment, the Territory combines wide-body proportions, cutting-edge tech, and accessible pricing into a compelling mid-size joint-venture package for budget-minded families.
