Goliath (historically trading as Goliath-Werke Borgward & Co.) was a pioneering German automotive manufacturer that operated from 1928 to 1961 in Bremen. Established by the technical visionary Carl F. W. Borgward and industrialist Wilhelm Tecklenborg, the company holds an immortal, historic position in global mechanical engineering: Goliath was the very first manufacturer in human history to mass-produce passenger cars equipped with Gasoline Direct Injection, beating the legendary Mercedes-Benz 300SL by nearly three years.
Operating as a critical, highly innovative subsidiary within the vast Borgward Group, Goliath specialized in highly creative, low-displacement engineering, ruling the post-war European economy through its micro-three-wheeled commercial transports and highly advanced compact family saloons. The brand was tragically dissolved in 1961 following the highly controversial forced liquidation of its parent conglomerate.
The Three-Wheeled Genesis and Reconstruction (1928–1949)
Following the absolute destruction of their Bremen manufacturing complexes during the strategic carpet-bombing of World War II, Goliath spearheaded West Germany’s economic recovery (Wirtschaftswunder). They rolled out thousands of updated Goliath GD750 three-wheeled commercial pickups. Because these tiny commercial haulers lacked a fourth wheel, contemporary German fiscal law exempted them from high vehicle taxes, turning them into the undisputed backbone of post-war small business distribution.
The Historic Direct Injection Revolution (1951–1956)
In 1951, Goliath shook the global automotive scientific community to its foundation by debuting the Goliath GP700 saloon at the Frankfurt Motor Show. At a time when the entire global car industry relied exclusively on mechanical carburettors, Goliath partnered with electronics giant Bosch to successfully design, refine, and deploy a microscopic, high-pressure mechanical gasoline direct injection system.
By spraying pressurized fuel directly into the combustion chamber of the GP700's tiny 688cc twin-cylinder two-stroke engine, thermal efficiency sky-rocketed. Output surged by over 20 per cent (from 25 hp to 29 hp), fuel consumption dropped significantly, and the smoky two-stroke emissions were cleaned up. This milestone marked the arrival of the world's very first production GDI passenger vehicle, paving the technical path for automotive efficiency decades before Mercedes-Benz commercialized the tech on their 1954 300SL Gullwing.
The Four-Stroke Boxer Era and Tragic Demise (1957–1961)
Ambitious to shed its stigmatized post-war reputation as a builder of noisy, smoky two-stroke economy cars, Goliath undertook a massive engineering leap in 1957 by launching the elegant Goliath Hansa 1100. The factory completely abandoned two-stroke layouts in favour of a highly sophisticated, water-cooled 1.1-litre all-aluminium horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine (Boxer layout)—an architectural design mirror-imaging the engineering templates of Porsche and Subaru. Clothed in a sweeping, dual-tone body featuring highly fashionable American-styled tailfins, the Hansa 1100 became a critically acclaimed mid-market premium grand tourer.
However, corporate catastrophe struck from the outside. In 1961, the Bremen regional government orchestrated a highly controversial, forced bankruptcy and liquidation of the parent Borgward Group. While Goliath’s independent books were highly stable, its product pipelines were highly competitive, and its export order logs were packed, it was legally dragged down into the forced asset sale. In 1958, the factory attempted a defensive re-branding, dropping the "Goliath" name to trade under its premium sub-brand Hansa, but the corporate guillotine fell regardless, and production wrapped up permanently in 1961.
The Bosch-Goliath GDI Matrix: The mechanical layout engineered by Bosch for Goliath utilized a specialized plunger-type injection pump synchronized straight to the crankshaft, spraying atomized petrol straight past the spark plug tip. It stands as the direct grandfather of 21st-century direct-injection engines.
The Front-Wheel-Drive Transverse Blueprint: Decades before front-wheel-drive configurations became standard, Goliath mounted its engines sideways (transversely) over the front driving axle, maximizing passenger legroom and high-speed highway tracking stability.
Goliath GP700 Sport (1951–1953): An ultra-rare, breathtakingly streamlined aluminium-bodied sports coupé utilizing the world's pioneer production fuel-injection powertrain. Today, surviving examples are prized museum pieces globally.
