2026-09-23 13:50:01

The AITO M5 is the debut model from the AITO marque, developed through an in-depth collaboration between Seres and Huawei, positioned as a smart electric-drive mid-size SUV. As a showcase of HIMA (Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance) technology, it deeply integrates Huawei's cutting-edge innovations in smart cockpits, intelligent driving, and EV powertrain systems (motor, battery, and electronic control), making it a prime representative of the "electrified + intelligent" dual advantage in the current new energy vehicle (NEV) market.

Model Overview

The AITO M5 made its debut at the Huawei Winter Flagship Launch Event on 23 December 2021 before going on sale officially in early 2022. Serving as the trailblazer for the AITO brand, it is also the first mass-produced SUV under the Huawei Smart Selection model, with official recommended retail prices ranging from RM229,800 to RM309,800. As of 21 November 2025, cumulative deliveries of the AITO M5 had reached 160,000 units. The model is available in two powertrain options: extended-range electric (EREV) and battery electric (BEV), catering to different driving needs. The entire line-up is equipped with the Huawei DriveONE pure electric drive range-extender platform, HarmonyOS smart cockpit, and HUAWEI ADS high-level intelligent driving system, covering every aspect of smart mobility. The SUV measures 4,785 mm long, 1,930 mm wide, and 1,620 mm (or 1,625 mm) tall, riding on a 2,880 mm wheelbase with either rear-wheel-drive (RWD) or dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) layouts, firmly positioned in the new energy mid-size SUV segment.

Design Language

Styling-wise, the AITO M5 adopts a sleek, coupe-like SUV silhouette with clean, minimalist lines. Up front, it features a closed-off grille characteristic of pure EVs, flanked by "wake-up lion" LED headlamps with active lower air shutters, giving it an elegant yet athletic stance. The refreshed AITO M5 introduced in April 2024 gained darkened brand badging alongside two exclusive sporty exterior shades—Metropolitan Red and Tahiti Grey—to further accentuate its dynamic character. In profile, flush pop-out door handles are fitted, while the rear sports a full-width Star Ring LED tail lamp bar with an illuminated AITO script set in the centre. The aerodynamic drag coefficient stands at a low 0.266 Cd. Six exterior colours are available: Gilt Black, Warm Cloud White, Tahiti Grey, Agility Red, Phantom Purple, and Zero Degree White.

Inside, the AITO M5 champions a minimalist and eco-conscious theme, featuring an uncluttered dashboard where physical switchgear has been significantly reduced. Most vehicle functions are integrated into a 15.6-inch floating 2K touchscreen infotainment display. It is accompanied by a 10.25-inch full digital instrument cluster and a steering-column-mounted electronic gear selector, freeing up substantial space across the centre console. Three interior colourways are on offer: Shaohua Apricot, Queyu Red, and Chacha Orange. The seats are trimmed in premium leather, with power adjustment, heating, ventilation, and massage functions fitted as standard for the front row, alongside rear seat heating. The cabin is further insulated with acoustic double-glazed glass and features a panoramic glass roof (with an optional powered sunshade), striking a balance between airy openness and privacy.

Powertrain & Performance

The AITO M5 is offered with both extended-range (EREV) and pure electric (BEV) powertrains. The EREV variant pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder range extender (functioning solely as an on-board generator, with no direct mechanical connection to the wheels) with either a single rear motor or dual front and rear motors. The RWD variant delivers a maximum output of 200 kW and 360 Nm of torque, completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in 7.1 seconds. The AWD variant adds a 165 kW front motor for a combined system output of 365 kW and 675 Nm, slashing the 0-100 km/h acceleration time to just 4.3 seconds. Powering the system is a 42 kWh ternary lithium battery pack, providing a CLTC pure electric range of 255 km (RWD) and 230 km (AWD), while total combined range stretches up to 1,440 km (RWD) and 1,275 km (AWD). Fuel consumption in charge-depleting mode is around 6.1 L/100 km, supported by a 56-litre fuel tank.

The BEV variant comes strictly in an RWD layout, driven by a rear-mounted motor producing 200 kW and 360 Nm, paired with an 83 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. It claims a CLTC pure electric range of 602 km, while a 30% to 80% DC fast-charging session takes 30 minutes. An 80-litre front boot (frunk) is also included to enhance luggage practicality.

Chassis & Handling

Underneath, the AITO M5 boasts premium chassis underpinnings rarely seen at this price point. The entire range rides on a lightweight all-aluminium alloy chassis, which cuts unsprung mass by roughly 30% compared with conventional steel setups, significantly sharpening suspension response and steering accuracy. The suspension system pairs a front four-ball-joint double-wishbone setup with a rear multi-link (incorporating an H-arm) independent suspension, tuned by a dedicated vehicle dynamics team. It posted a moose test entry speed of 79 km/h, while the unladen 100-0 km/h braking distance for the EREV Max RS variant measures just 35.58 metres. The overall chassis setup strikes a fine balance between spirited agility and everyday ride comfort. Standard across the range is Huawei's "Comfort Braking" function, which refines pedal modulation and brake force distribution to enhance deceleration smoothness by 81%.

Both RWD and AWD configurations are available (AWD exclusive to the EREV). Drive modes include Standard, Eco, Sport, and Comfort, while AWD models gain an aggressive Sport+ mode for maximum performance delivery. The steering provides sharp turn-in with communicative road feedback.

Cockpit & Features

The AITO M5 is powered by Huawei’s HarmonyOS smart cockpit, serving as a prime benchmark for automotive smart ecosystem integration. Hardware highlights comprise a 15.6-inch floating 2K central touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, driven by a Kirin 990A processor backed by 8 GB of RAM for seamless, lag-free responsiveness. The system supports Huawei Super Desktop, allowing seamless app continuity, cross-device screen casting, and remote operation via Huawei smartphones and smartwatches. The "Celia" (Xiaoyi) voice assistant features rapid voice recognition, handling complex vehicle functions effortlessly through multi-scenario natural voice prompts.

For creature comforts, dual 50W Huawei wireless fast-charging pads and 100W wired charging ports come standard up front. Both front seats offer power adjustment, heating, ventilation, and massage, with driver memory and a 4-way powered leg rest (reclining up to 74 degrees) for the front passenger. Rear passengers also enjoy seat heating. Audiophiles are treated to a 19-speaker HUAWEI SOUND premium audio setup calibrated with Huawei acoustic algorithms, complete with a private soundstage mode tailored for the driver. Boot capacity measures 369 litres under standard conditions, expandable to 776 litres with the rear seats folded flat to accommodate family road trips.

Safety & Intelligent Driving

Advanced driver assistance is the crowning jewel of the AITO M5, coming standard with the HUAWEI Qiankun ADS suite across all trims. Its comprehensive hardware suite includes a 192-line roof-mounted LiDAR (with a 200-metre detection range), three 4D millimetre-wave radars (or three standard millimetre-wave radars on select trims), 11 HD cameras, and 12 ultrasonic sensors, building a full-spectrum, all-weather situational awareness bubble. The system facilitates Navigation Cruise Assist (NCA) across highway and urban environments, Automated Valet Parking (AVP), and mapless high-tier autonomous driving nationwide. The 2025 AITO M5 Ultra upgrades to HUAWEI ADS 3.0, enabling end-to-end parking-spot-to-parking-spot autonomous navigation, and has earned the "Road Impact Safety Performance Certificate No. 001" from CATARC. Active safety is fortified by Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), which can bring the vehicle to a complete stop from speeds of up to 80 km/h when detecting stationary obstacles.

On the passive safety front, the AITO M5 is engineered around a high-strength safety cage structure, heavily incorporating ultra-high-strength steel and high-tensile aluminium alloys in critical load-bearing zones. Standard safety gear includes dual front, front side, and full-length curtain airbags. A 540-degree surround-view camera (with a transparent underbody view) and a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) are standard across the lineup, providing added reassurance during low-speed manoeuvres and tight parking spots. Structural crashworthiness complies with top-tier C-NCAP safety standards.

Market Performance & Reception

The AITO M5 has experienced considerable sales volatility since its introduction. Buoyed by the immense brand equity of Huawei during its early launch phase, it achieved over 10,000 deliveries within its first 87 days, occasionally topping 16,000 monthly units. However, consistent sales momentum proved elusive; outside of August 2022 when deliveries peaked at 16,840 units, the model failed to breach the 10,000-unit monthly threshold again, hitting a low of just 395 units in March 2024. By April 2026, monthly volume slipped to 438 units, indicating growing marginalisation in the market. Cumulative deliveries stood at 160,000 units by 21 November 2025.

This sales roller-coaster stems from multiple headwinds. Internally, the relentless pace of Huawei's ADS software updates—iterating on a monthly or even weekly basis—fostered a "buyer's remorse" mindset among prospects fearing instant obsolescence, causing many to adopt a wait-and-see approach for subsequent models. Furthermore, internal cannibalisation within the AITO stable grew pronounced; as the M7 cemented its grip on the family SUV sector and the flagship M8 and M9 took over the luxury segment, marketing and production bandwidth shifted towards higher-volume siblings, clouding the M5's value proposition. Externally, rivalry in the RM250,000 to RM300,000 mid-size SUV bracket escalated fiercely. With its 4,785 mm length and 2,880 mm wheelbase, the M5 found itself outsized by contenders like the Tesla Model Y and IM LS6, while entry-level Huawei-backed alternatives like Shangjie applied further squeeze from below.

Owner sentiment remains split down the middle. Accolades centre heavily on the sports-car-like chassis dynamics courtesy of the all-aluminium double-wishbone hardware, the seamless multi-device synergy enabled by the HarmonyOS cockpit, and the class-leading benchmark set by Huawei ADS in active collision avoidance. Conversely, criticisms spotlight the comparatively tight cabin packaging and boot space versus same-class rivals, leaving family-oriented buyers wanting more. Rapid driver-assist hardware and software roll-outs have also left early adopters feeling their rides were "outdated upon delivery", while overlapping portfolios across HIMA's broader multi-brand alliance have diluted the M5's distinct identity.

As of May 2026, Huawei leadership confirmed during an official keynote that a full model change for the AITO M5 is slated for autumn 2027. Whether this next-generation successor can execute a comprehensive leap in packaging efficiency, performance, and next-gen autonomous driving hardware will be closely watched by the industry.
