2026-09-28 12:10:03

HUAKAI is a Chinese commercial vehicle brand operated by Mingjun Auto Co., Ltd., with roots tracing back to the Changchun FAW Light Vehicle Factory established in 1986. Headquartered in Changchun, Jilin Province, the marque currently forms part of the Mingjun Auto industrial ecosystem. Backed by over 30 years of vehicle manufacturing heritage, HUAKAI's product portfolio spans microvans, pick-up trucks, mini lorries, light-duty trucks, and specialised commercial vehicles. The brand emblem features an oval surround enclosing the numeral '1' alongside stylized 'C' and 'Q' letters, signifying its 'Changqing' (Changchun FAW Light Vehicle Factory) heritage. Dedicated primarily to urban-rural logistics, freight haulage, and custom coachbuilding markets, HUAKAI positions its lineup around durability and value for money.

Development History

HUAKAI's automaking lineage dates back to 1969. It originated as the Changchun Dongfeng Automobile Manufacturing Plant before being absorbed into the First Automobile Works (FAW) fold in 1986, when it was renamed First Automobile Works Changchun Light Vehicle Factory, subsequently becoming a wholly owned FAW Group subsidiary in 1991. Spending over two decades under the FAW umbrella provided HUAKAI with significant engineering advantages in commercial vehicle chassis development, complete vehicle manufacturing, and regulatory type-approval qualifications. In May 2009, Mingjun Group restructured the outfit by acquiring Changchun FAW Light Vehicle Factory from FAW Group and establishing Changchun FAW HUAKAI Automobile Co., Ltd. (with Mingjun Group holding an 80% stake and individual investors holding the remainder), marking its formal entry into complete vehicle production. The plant subsequently achieved an annual production capacity of 30,000 complete vehicles and 60,000 drive axles. In September 2011, Mingjun Auto Co., Ltd. was officially established in the Chengdu Longquanyi Economic and Technological Development Zone as an inter-regional, cross-industry holding firm, bringing the HUAKAI marque under Mingjun Auto's unified management while retaining complete vehicle assembly at the Changchun production base.

From 2011 onwards, HUAKAI accelerated its brand building and model expansion. In October that year, Mingjun Group broke ground on its Commercial Vehicle (Changchun) Industrial Park with a planned investment of around RM2,200,000,000. In October 2014, the FAW HUAKAI pick-up and light truck range made their formal debut at the Western China International Fair in Chengdu, signalling HUAKAI's arrival as a standalone product range. In 2014, Changchun FAW HUAKAI Co., Ltd. was renamed Mingjun Auto Co., Ltd., with HUAKAI continuing as its core marque. Around 2017, the HUAKAI portfolio broadened into microvans, mini lorries, and new energy commercial vehicles. In September 2022, HUAKAI launched its all-electric microvan, marking its entry into the electric commercial vehicle segment. By 2025, HUAKAI maintained its commercial vehicle operations while continuing to explore green vehicle niches.

Brand Matrix / Product Lineup

HUAKAI's product portfolio is built around commercial haulage across conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) and new energy vehicle (NEV) segments. The multi-segment lineup encompasses microvans, pick-up trucks, mini lorries, light trucks, and special-purpose vehicles, currently fielding 6 model lines and approximately 14 variants on sale.

Microvan and Mini Lorry Series have become key growth drivers for HUAKAI in recent years. The HUAKAI VB06 is a microvan powered by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox in a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) layout, with recommended retail pricing ranging from RM46,800 to RM52,800. The model is aimed at short-distance urban passenger shuttles and flexible transport for small business operators. The HUAKAI New Energy is an all-electric microvan priced at around RM136,252 post-incentives. Meanwhile, the HUAKAI New Energy VE06 serves as the brand's core electric mini lorry, offered in three primary body styles: dropside cargo lorry, stake truck, and box van. The standard wheelbase (SWB) version is priced from RM123,600 to RM130,600, with long wheelbase (LWB) derivatives also on offer.

Pick-up Truck Series represents HUAKAI's signature model line and the first nameplate rolled out following Mingjun Auto's takeover. The HUAKAI pick-up is offered with two powertrain choices: a 2.2-litre petrol unit sourced from Mianyang Xinchen Power (JM491Q-ME) producing 103 hp and 183 Nm of torque, and a JMC-sourced JE493ZQ8 turbodiesel churning out 92 hp and 200 Nm of torque. Both units are paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox sending power to the rear wheels (RWD) over a rugged ladder-frame chassis. Styled with a utilitarian, rugged aesthetic, the front end features twin horizontal chrome bars over a honeycomb radiator grille, with a bedliner fitted as standard across all variants to enhance cargo bed utility. Indicative pricing ranges from RM65,400 to RM77,800 across 8 variants.

Light-duty Truck and Special-Purpose Vehicle Series is HUAKAI's most historically rooted division. HUAKAI's heavy, medium, and light commercial vehicles hold national manufacturing qualifications under the 'Jiefang', 'HUAKAI', and 'Changchun' badges, spanning 289 vehicle type approvals, 437 vehicle types, and 4,036 catalogue configurations. The range spans stake trucks, box vans, driving school training vehicles, tank transporters, postal vans, prime movers, tipper dump trucks, buses, and all-electric multi-purpose passenger vehicles, catering to regional logistics, general cargo haulage, and bespoke commercial body conversions.

Notably, the 'HUAKAI' trade name is also utilised by Guangzhou Huakai Vehicle Equipment Co., Ltd. As one of China's pioneer manufacturers specialising in the development and sale of police riot control and armoured vehicles, the firm holds 47 registered trademarks, including 'Sabertooth' and 'Velociraptor', alongside 33 national patents. The company is a key player in specialised security vehicles and was officially recognised as a Guangdong Province 'Specialised, Refined, Differential, and Innovative' SME in 2023.

Market Performance

In China's commercial vehicle sector, HUAKAI has long been positioned as an affordable, hard-working workhorse brand catering to blue-collar trades in urban-rural logistics, light haulage, and specialised conversions. Given the lack of standalone statistical breakdowns for the brand, detailed sales figures have remained sparse in public registries. In terms of price positioning, the HUAKAI VB06's entry price of RM46,800 puts it head-to-head with mainstream commercial rivals like Wuling, while the HUAKAI pick-up targets the budget utility market within the RM60,000 to RM70,000 bracket. The HUAKAI New Energy VE06, priced between RM120,000 and RM130,000 post-rebates, sits in the mid-range tier of the electric mini lorry segment.

On the distribution and fleet front, backed by Mingjun Auto, HUAKAI operates R&D branches and subsidiaries across Sichuan, Jilin, and Heilongjiang provinces, maintaining long-standing fleet supply partnerships with the military, China Post, state power utilities, PetroChina, municipal bus operators, and nationwide public sanitation procurement bodies. On the after-sales side, while HUAKAI previously commanded an annual assembly capacity of 60,000 complete vehicles and chassis, consumer-facing brand equity remains modest, with some owners citing scattered spare parts availability and after-sales service coverage.

Core Technologies

HUAKAI's engineering foundation draws heavily from FAW Light Vehicle Factory's commercial vehicle pedigree, complemented by modular improvements and new energy integration under Mingjun Auto's stewardship.

Conventional Powertrain Tech: The HUAKAI pick-up's 2.2-litre petrol powerplant (JM491Q-ME) from Mianyang Xinchen Power utilizes multi-point fuel injection (MPI) to deliver smooth, economical low-to-mid-range torque. The JMC JE493ZQ8 direct-injection turbodiesel is tuned for heavy-load hill climbing and sustained long-haul haulage. Both powerplants comply with relevant emission standards to suit daily transport needs. Chassis-wise, the HUAKAI pick-up rides on a ladder-frame construction paired with a rigid axle and semi-elliptic leaf spring rear suspension for heavy-duty payload durability, while the rear-wheel-drive configuration ensures high load-bearing efficiency under heavy payloads.

New Energy Tech: The HUAKAI New Energy VE06 electric light lorry is built on an electrified conversion of a conventional commercial platform. It features a 35.9 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack paired with a rear-mounted electric motor producing 60 kW of peak power and 200 Nm of peak torque. Delivering a pure electric driving range of 240 km, it supports DC fast charging from 0 to 80% state of charge in 1.5 hours, with standard AC charging requiring 10 hours. The VE06 delivers superior running energy efficiency over comparable ICE models, boasting a payload capacity of approximately 930 to 940 kg in standard wheelbase trim. Additionally, HUAKAI previously introduced the MJC7000BEV2 electric passenger sedan, equipped with a ternary lithium-ion battery and an electric motor rated at 10 kW continuous / 20 kW peak output.

Manufacturing and Coachbuilding Capabilities: Mingjun Auto operates complete manufacturing facilities spanning the four primary automotive production processes—stamping, welding, painting, and final assembly—at its Chengdu and Changchun plants. Meanwhile, Guangzhou Huakai Vehicle Equipment Co., Ltd. contributes over two decades of specialised engineering experience in ballistic protection, vehicle armouring, and custom conversions for tactical law enforcement vehicles, backed by a wide portfolio of technical patents.

Nevertheless, HUAKAI's proprietary R&D in the EV space remains relatively modest. The 'ICE-derived EV conversion' route adopted for the VE06 leaves a noticeable gap in operating range, charging speed, and energy optimization when compared against dedicated platforms from frontline new energy commercial vehicle makers.

Overseas Footprint

As a domestic Chinese commercial vehicle marque, HUAKAI has limited documented complete vehicle export volumes under its own name. Most vehicle exports have been coordinated through the overseas trading network of parent company Mingjun Auto. Guided by Mingjun Auto's global roadmap—which emphasizes technological, market, institutional, and operational innovation to leverage dual domestic and international resources—HUAKAI commercial vehicles have been exported in batches to select developing markets through Mingjun Auto's overseas trade channels.

In addition, specialised police armoured and riot control vehicles from Guangzhou Huakai Vehicle Equipment Co., Ltd. have been exported abroad via the Ministry of Public Security's tactical gear procurement channels and international defense networks. Up to 2019, Huakai consistently ranked first in annual armoured vehicle deliveries on the Ministry of Public Security procurement platform, demonstrating proven export capabilities in the specialised vehicle segment. Separately, 'Huakai Yibai' (300592.SZ) is a publicly traded cross-border consumer goods e-commerce entity, completely independent and legally distinct from the HUAKAI automotive brand.

Future Outlook

Entering early 2026, HUAKAI continues to operate as the dedicated commercial vehicle arm of Mingjun Auto. The parent group coordinates manufacturing output across Chengdu, Zigong, and Changchun, maintaining an established commercial vehicle assembly network. On the green mobility front, initial offerings like the VE06 and electric microvan underline the brand's electrification ambitions, though the transition remains in its developmental phase.

To secure sustainable long-term growth, HUAKAI faces notable headwinds: subdued brand awareness compared to dominant players like Wuling, Changan, and Foton; steep EV pricing, with the 2025 VE06 electric mini lorry commanding an RM80,000 premium over equivalent ICE variants despite an urban-limited 240 km range; and the pressing need for greater investment into proprietary EV powertrain technologies (battery, motor, electronic control unit), product refreshes, and dealer networks amid the market's rapid shift toward electrification and smart commercial mobility. On the whole, HUAKAI remains on a steady baseline supported by specialised municipal conversions and B2B fleet contracts, though building stronger traction in the mainstream retail commercial market will hinge on strategic capital injections and sustained backing from Mingjun Auto.
