ISOFIX (International Organisation for Standardisation Fix) is a globally recognised standard for vehicle child seat anchorage systems (standardised under ISO 13216). Unlike conventional methods that rely purely on a 3-point seatbelt to strap down the child car seat, the ISOFIX system features dedicated anchor points built directly into the rear seats and rigidly mounted to the vehicle's steel chassis. By pairing rigid metal latches with a top tether (or support leg), the system establishes a direct mechanical connection to the vehicle body structure, significantly simplifying the installation process and greatly boosting impact protection for child occupants in a crash.
The ISOFIX technical architecture primarily comprises chassis-welded lower anchors, seatback/rear top tether anchor points, rigid child seat locking arms, and dual anti-misuse locking and position indicators:
Chassis Rigid Lower Anchors and Snap-In Hard Connections:
Two 6 mm diameter steel U-shaped bars (lower anchors) are discreetly positioned at the junction between the rear seat squab and backrest, welded directly to the body-in-white (BIW) core structure. The dual rigid locking arms extending from the base of the child seat slot directly and latch securely onto these U-bars, delivering a solid mechanical lock that does not rely on seatbelt friction at all.
Top Tether or Support Leg Anti-Rollover System:
To prevent the child seat from tilting forward due to inertia during a frontal collision, a complete ISOFIX setup typically integrates a third anchoring point—a top tether anchor located on the rear of the seatback, inside the boot, or on the floor (or via a floor-mounted support leg). Tensioning the top tether or bracing the support leg against the floor creates a stable triangular load-bearing structure, effectively eliminating forward pitching and unwanted movement of the seat.
Do Not Transport Children Without Checking Visual Indicators and Performing a Physical Shake Test to Ensure ISOFIX Arms and Top Tethers Are Fully Latched:
ISOFIX safety relies entirely on a fully engaged mechanical lock. Never assume the seat is fitted properly without hearing a clear, audible "click", and never neglect tensioning the top tether. If the latching mechanism is improperly engaged, the child seat can easily detach under hard braking or in an accident, posing severe or fatal risks to the child occupant.
Never Exceed the Maximum Weight Limit of the ISOFIX System or Use Incompatible, Non-Standard Seats for the Child's Age and Size:
Standard ISOFIX connectors and built-in vehicle anchor points carry strict physical load limits (typically rated for a combined mass of the child and child seat, usually up to 18 kg or 33 kg depending on the specification). It is strictly prohibited to rely exclusively on ISOFIX anchors once the child's weight or total seat mass exceeds the vehicle owner manual's rated threshold. In such cases, switching to a combined seatbelt-and-ISOFIX setup or upgrading to a restraint system with a higher load rating is strictly required.
