The Jaecoo 7 PHEV is the maiden compact plug-in hybrid SUV from Jaecoo (derived from the German "Jäger cool", meaning "cool hunter"), a premium sub-brand under China's Chery Automobile Group. First launched in the UK in early 2025, the vehicle subsequently rolled out across global markets including Germany, Italy, Australia, Malaysia, and Thailand, serving as a core model in Chery's global new energy vehicle (NEV) offensive. Positioned as a five-seater family mid-size PHEV SUV, its key selling point is the "Super Hybrid System (SHS)", which prioritises electric drive to deliver low fuel consumption and an extensive driving range. In terms of dimensions, the SUV measures 4,500 mm long, 1,865 mm wide, and 1,670 mm tall, with a 2,672 mm wheelbase. Across major markets, it starts from €36,900 in Germany, around £35,165 in the UK, roughly A$43,990 in Australia, and is priced at RM158,800 in Malaysia, going head-to-head against key rivals such as the BYD Seal U DM-i and MG HS PHEV.
The Jaecoo 7 PHEV adopts a bold, squarish SUV design language, featuring an imposing signature waterfall front grille flanked by split LED headlights. The overall styling incorporates design cues reminiscent of the Range Rover and Range Rover Evoque, exuding a rugged and commanding road presence. Along the sides, the clean silhouette is complemented by flush pop-out door handles, roof rails, a roof-mounted spoiler, and 19-inch dual-tone alloy wheels. At the rear, it features a distinctive full-width "crystal array" LED taillight cluster for high visual recognition. Exterior colour choices include Carbon Crystal Black, Olive Green, and Moonlight Silver, with an optional two-tone finish featuring a black roof.
Inside, the Jaecoo 7 PHEV embraces an "accessible luxury" design theme. The T-shaped dashboard layout retains physical buttons for essential controls, striking a practical balance between modern tech and operational ergonomics. The seats are upholstered in eco-friendly synthetic leather, with the front seats featuring heating and ventilation functions. The front passenger seat also includes shoulder-mounted electric adjustment buttons to slide the seat forward for easier rear occupant ingress and egress. A brown synthetic leather interior theme is also available, adorning the seats, dashboard, door cards, and centre console armrest.
Under the bonnet, the Jaecoo 7 PHEV is powered by Chery's 5th-generation 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged GDI direct-injection petrol engine, producing 105 kW (approx. 143 PS) and 215 Nm of torque, utilising a deep Miller cycle and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) to achieve high thermal efficiency. The electric drive setup features a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor rated at 150 kW (approx. 204 PS) and 310 Nm, bringing total combined system output to 205 kW (approx. 279 PS) and 365 Nm of torque. Power is delivered through a 1-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), significantly cutting drivetrain energy loss. An 18.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack delivers an all-electric range of around 90 km (WLTP) and 106 km (NEDC). On a full tank and full charge, the WLTP combined driving range exceeds 1,200 km, with a rated combined fuel consumption as low as 5.99 L/100 km (WLTP). The vehicle supports 40 kW DC fast charging across the range, taking just 20 minutes to replenish from 30% to 80% SoC, while standard 6.6 kW AC charging completes a 0–100% charge in approximately 3.33 hours.
The Jaecoo 7 PHEV employs a front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FWD) layout, riding on a suspension setup comprising front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent suspension, with the rear multi-link setup enhancing ride comfort and high-speed stability. An all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant featuring a dual-motor electric AWD system is also available. Braking is handled by ventilated discs up front and solid discs at the rear paired with an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB), riding on 235/50 R19 tyres. It boasts a minimum turning radius of around 11 metres, a 750 kg roof load capacity, and a 1,500 kg braked towing capacity. The chassis setup is primarily comfort-oriented; following European market retuning, the damping feels firmer and more composed, though it can still transmit slight harshness over severely rutted roads. The steering weighting is light and effortless for daily urban driving, though on-centre precision could be sharper during enthusiastic driving.
On the infotainment and technology front, the Jaecoo 7 PHEV comes standard with a 10.25-inch full digital instrument cluster and a 14.8-inch portrait-oriented floating touchscreen head unit running on an Android-based operating system, complete with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and voice command support. Audio is piped through an 8-speaker Sony premium sound system delivering an immersive acoustic experience. Cabin amenities include a Head-Up Display (HUD), a 50W wireless smartphone charger, dual-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic glass roof, a powered tailgate, four USB ports across both rows, 64-colour ambient lighting, and a 540° surround-view camera system with transparent chassis view. For seating, the driver gets a 6-way power-adjustable seat with memory and welcome functions, while the front passenger enjoys 4-way power adjustment. Front seats come standard with heating and ventilation, while the outer rear seats are equipped with seat warmers. Boot capacity ranges from 340 litres to 500 litres in standard configuration (depending on variant), expanding up to 1,265 litres with the rear seats folded down.
In terms of crash safety, the Jaecoo 7 PHEV achieved a full five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, scoring 81% for Adult Occupant Protection, 80% for Child Occupant Protection, 80% for Vulnerable Road Users, and 80% for Safety Assist. During testing, the rear section of the side curtain airbag deployed incompletely due to a C-pillar trim clip assembly issue; Jaecoo swiftly rectified the assembly process and tightened factory quality control. The SUV comes standard with 8 airbags across the lineup, including dual front airbags, front side airbags, and front-to-rear side curtain airbags.
For active safety, the Jaecoo 7 PHEV is equipped with a Level 2+ Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite encompassing 18 active safety features, including Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB with pedestrian, cyclist, and motorcyclist detection), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Emergency Lane Keeping (ELK), Blind Spot Detection (BSD) with collision prevention, Rear Cross Traffic Alert with Auto Brake (RCTA/RCTB), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), Door Opening Warning (DOW), and Driver Monitoring System (DMS).
The Jaecoo 7 PHEV has achieved remarkable commercial success in international markets. In August 2025, it emerged as the best-selling PHEV model in the UK; by September of the same year, the Jaecoo 7 range climbed to fourth overall in the UK new car sales charts with 6,489 units delivered in a single month. In its first full calendar year in the UK (January 2025 to January 2026), the Jaecoo brand registered 33,173 vehicles, with the SHS plug-in hybrid variant making up 70% of total Jaecoo 7 sales, serving as the cornerstone of the brand's growth. Outside the UK, the Jaecoo 7 has demonstrated similarly strong momentum—priced from just €38,900 in Italy, it quickly gained significant market traction; in Australia, it accumulated over 500 bookings within months of its debut; while in Pakistan, it garnered thousands of orders within just 48 hours of launch. In terms of industry accolades, the vehicle bagged the prestigious "Car of the Year" title at the 2025 Leasing.com Awards and contributed to Jaecoo being named Carwow Brand of the Year 2026. Automotive motoring journalists have widely lauded its competitive price point, superb electric-first powertrain efficiency, and generous standard kit and interior space relative to its price bracket; however, some test drive reviews noted that the rear headrests could offer better ergonomic contouring and the steering feel remains on the lighter, less communicative side. Overall, backed by an actual real-world driving range exceeding 1,000 km from its SHS Super Hybrid System, class-above specifications, and an aggressive pricing strategy, the Jaecoo 7 PHEV has swiftly cemented Chinese premium plug-in hybrid SUVs as formidable contenders in mature global markets within just two years of launch, marking a defining milestone in Chery Group's overseas new energy expansion.
