BYD Company Limited was established on February 10, 1995, headquartered in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, and founded by Wang Chuanfu. The company started with secondary rechargeable batteries and has now developed into an international tech enterprise covering four major industrial sectors: automobiles, rail transit, new energy, and electronics. Always adhering to the development philosophy of "Technology is King, Innovation is the Root," it has formed a full industrial chain layout from R&D and design to vehicle manufacturing in the new energy vehicle field, and is a leading enterprise in the global new energy vehicle industry.
Starting from Battery (1995–2002):
On November 18, 1994, Wang Chuanfu led 20 employees to start their entrepreneurial journey in a simple factory in the Metallurgical Compound of Buji, Shenzhen. In the early days of the company, it primarily operated nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride, and other secondary rechargeable batteries, focusing on the field of consumer electronics supporting batteries. In 1997, BYD established its Central Research Department; that same year, it became the first Chinese enterprise to mass-produce lithium-ion batteries, laying a solid technical foundation for the development of subsequent new energy fields. In 1998, BYD established a European subsidiary, officially beginning its global expansion. In 2000, BYD's independently developed lithium-ion batteries passed Motorola's strict quality certification, becoming Motorola's first lithium-ion battery supplier in China. In 2002, BYD was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and became Nokia's first lithium-ion battery supplier in China.
Crossover Automobile Period (2003–2010):
In January 2003, BYD acquired Xi'an Qinchuan Automobile Co., Ltd., officially entering the automobile manufacturing industry, which triggered widespread attention in the industry. In 2006, BYD successfully developed the all-electric sedan F3e, equipped with the world's first iron-phosphate power battery, ET-Power, independently developed, officially beginning its layout for new energy vehicles. In 2008, BYD launched the world's first mass-produced plug-in hybrid vehicle, the F3DM, opening the era of electrification transformation. During this period, BYD established an industrial pattern driven by the twin wheels of batteries and automobiles.
Business Takeoff (2011–Present):
In 2020, BYD launched Blade Batteries and DM-i Super Hybrid Technology, solving core pain points such as power battery safety and fuel economy, driving sales into an explosive growth period. From the launch of its first new energy vehicle to the 5 millionth unit rolling off the line, BYD took 15 years; from 5 million to 10 million units, it took only 15 months. In 2025, BYD surpassed Tesla for the first time, becoming the global champion in pure electric vehicle sales, with full-year sales reaching 4.602 million units, surpassing SAIC Motor to take the crown of the Chinese auto market sales.
BYD has built a complete brand matrix covering mass to premium, and from mainstream to personalized, forming a "Five Networks, Four Brands" layout.
BYD Main Brand (Dynasty | Ocean): Positioned for the mass market, covering the Dynasty series (Qin, Han, Tang, Song, Yuan) and the Ocean series (Seal, Sealion, Dolphin), and covering all categories such as sedans, SUVs, and MPVs. This is the core support for BYD's sales base.
Denza: A joint venture brand of BYD and Mercedes-Benz, positioned for mid-to-high-end new energy vehicles, focusing on niche categories such as luxury MPVs and electric supercars. Brand vitality has significantly improved since BYD took over operations in recent years.
Fang Cheng Bao: Positioned for hardcore off-road and personalized mobility markets, divided into the "Leopard" series for professional off-road and the "Titanium" series for personalized city use, precisely targeting niche market segments.
Yangwang: The ultra-luxury brand with the highest positioning under BYD, targeting the million-level luxury new energy vehicle market, supporting its ultra-luxury positioning with top technologies such as e4 and DiSus.
In 2025, BYD achieved operating income of 803.965 billion RMB, global sales of 4.6024 million units, reigning as the global new energy vehicle sales champion for four consecutive years, with net profit reaching 32.62 billion RMB. Among them, the three premium brands—Fang Cheng Bao, Denza, and Yangwang—achieved total sales of 397,000 units, up 109% year-on-year, with their combined share increasing by nearly 100%. Overseas market performance was particularly bright: overseas sales exceeded 1.05 million units for the year, up 145% year-on-year, with business covering 119 countries and regions globally.
In 2026, BYD continued its strong momentum. In March 2026, BYD jumped to the top of passenger car group sales with approximately 296,000 units, solidly maintaining its leading position among domestic brands. During the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, BYD presented its complete "Five Networks, Four Brands" matrix lineup to the outside world in a dominant posture, occupying an entire pavilion, and focused on launching multiple new energy vehicle models positioned for mid-to-high-end and ultra-luxury markets.
BYD is one of the few car manufacturers in the industry that has achieved full-stack self-research of batteries, motors, and electronic controls, maintaining industry leadership in three-electric systems and mechanical hardware for a long time. The company continues to iterate and break through in electrification technology. Blade Battery technology has been upgraded from the first generation to the second generation, adopting a lithium manganese iron phosphate material system, with range easily breaking through 1,000 kilometers and significantly improved low-temperature performance. DM technology has been iterated to the sixth generation, reducing fuel consumption with an empty battery to within 2 liters per 100 kilometers.
In the field of intelligence, BYD accelerated its layout for the second half of the race with the concept of "Technology Equality." In February 2025, BYD released its "Everyone's Intelligent Driving" strategy, launching the DiPilot (God's Eye) intelligent driving assistance system technology matrix, covering markets from premium to mainstream through three versions: DiPilot A (Three LiDAR Version) used for the Yangwang brand, DiPilot B (LiDAR Version) serving Denza and the BYD main brand, and DiPilot C (Three-Eye Version) adapted for Fang Cheng Bao and the BYD brand. During the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, BYD's "DiPilot 5.0" intelligent driving system officially premiered, implementing full-scenario intelligent driving capabilities based on end-to-end large models.
In 2025, BYD established two core strategic directions: "Premiumization" and "Internationalization." At the internationalization level, overseas factories in Brazil, Hungary, and other locations continued to push for production, eight automobile transport ships went into operation, and the globalization layout is moving from simple product exports to localized production and a full-link layout. Electric vehicles produced at BYD's Thailand factory have been exported to the European market for the first time, demonstrating the synergistic efficiency of BYD's global production bases.
BYD founder Wang Chuanfu proposed BYD's vision of becoming a "long-lasting century-old enterprise." The company is gradually transforming from scale expansion to quality growth, committed to becoming a long-term leader in the global new energy vehicle industry. Looking to the future, BYD will continue to be guided by the philosophy of "Technology is the King, Innovation is the Root," continuously leading the global automotive industry transformation in the process of constantly breaking through the boundaries of electrification and intelligence technology.
