LKA (Lane Keeping Assist) is a core active safety and lateral control feature within Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Fundamentally different from Lane Departure Warning (LDW), which merely emits an audible chime or steering wheel vibration when crossing road markings, LKA actively intervenes by applying corrective torque to the steering system when unintentional lane departure occurs, automatically steering the vehicle back towards the centre of the lane. As a foundational lateral control technology essential for advanced intelligent driving, LKA effectively reduces driver fatigue and the risk of collisions during long-distance cruising or momentary lapses in concentration.
The technical architecture of LKA comprises three primary components: a forward-facing camera perception module, an Electronic Control Unit (ECU), and an Electric Power Steering (EPS) actuator:
Visual Lane Reconstruction and Vehicle Yaw Prediction:
The system's optical sensors (typically a monocular or multi-lens camera mounted at the top of the windscreen) capture real-time images of road markings ahead. Onboard image processors and algorithms accurately detect and map lane lines in real time, calculating the vehicle's relative distance to lane boundaries as well as the projected time-to-lane-crossing based on vehicle speed, steering angle, and yaw rate.
Active Steering Torque Application and Closed-Loop Correction Control:
Once the system detects that the vehicle is drifting out of its lane without the turn indicator engaged, the ECU instantly issues a command to the Electric Power Steering (EPS) system. The EPS motor smoothly applies assistive steering torque to the steering wheel, making precise micro-adjustments to the front wheels to gently guide the vehicle back into its lane. This corrective action operates in a closed-loop system alongside driver inputs; it can be effortlessly overridden by manual steering input, yet reliably prevents the vehicle from veering off course in critical moments.
Strict Prohibition of Hands-Off Driving, Sleeping, or Extended Inattention While LKA is Active (Prohibiting Removing Hands Completely from Steering Wheel, Sleeping, or Diverting Attention While LKA is Active):
LKA is strictly a driver-assist feature and does not possess all-weather, all-road autonomous driving capabilities. It must never be treated as a fully automated driving system. Drivers are required to keep their hands on the steering wheel at all times and remain prepared to take immediate manual control whenever lane markings become indistinct or in an emergency.
Strict Prohibition of Blind Reliance on LKA in Severe Weather, Unmarked/Damaged Roads, or Construction Diversions (Prohibiting Blind Reliance on LKA Active Correction in Severe Weather, Damaged Roads Without Clear Markings, or Construction Zones):
The proper operation of LKA relies heavily on clearly visible road markings and optimal optical conditions. Drivers should not engage this feature on snow-covered, mud-splattered, heavily worn roads, or construction zones with conflicting temporary markings. In such conditions, camera blinding or lane misinterpretation can easily trigger abrupt steering inputs, unintended lane wandering, or severe collisions.
