The MG Ei5 is a fully electric compact estate developed by SAIC MG, representing a rare pure electric wagon offering in China. The model is essentially the MG-badged twin of the Roewe Ei5, with both vehicles sharing SAIC's dedicated EV wagon platform and core electric drive systems. In September 2020, the MG Ei5 (marketed as the MG 5 EV) officially went on sale across the UK and European markets, priced from 30,710 euros (approx. RM244,000).
Due to the Ei5's prolonged presence as a commercial fleet and e-hailing vehicle in China, its visibility in the private consumer market has remained low; however, it has enjoyed steady demand in overseas markets such as Europe. Around 2024, monthly export sales of the MG 5 EV averaged over 1,000 units. Latest industry figures show that in November 2025 alone, the MG 5 EV recorded monthly sales of 221 units in the UK. At present, the Ei5 lineup is no longer an actively promoted model in China, with local availability largely limited to used units and leftover stock as sales efforts shift entirely overseas.
In terms of exterior styling, the MG Ei5 remains virtually identical to the Roewe Ei5, differing only in the switch to the MG octagon badge. The vehicle incorporates Roewe's signature "Rhythm Design" language, featuring an inverted trapezoidal multi-slat chrome grille connected to slim LED headlights, creating sleek lines and a clean, sophisticated profile. The side profile presents a classic estate silhouette with a gently sloping, flat roofline fitted with roof rails, blending aesthetics with practicality. At the rear, the tail lights are linked by a full-width chrome accent strip, while the lower bumper is finished with black inserts and chrome trim to mirror the front fascia. The 5-door, 5-seater MG Ei5 measures 4,544 mm long, 1,818 mm wide, and 1,536 mm tall (or 4,600 mm x 1,818 mm x 1,543 mm), with a 2,665 mm wheelbase.
The interior likewise mirrors the Roewe Ei5 cabin layout, headlined by a dual-screen digital setup with a centre console distinctly angled towards the driver. The cabin is largely wrapped in leatherette upholstery, highlighted by silver metallic trim, full-width air-con vents, and integrated ambient lighting strips. Gear selection is operated via an electronic rotary dial, complemented by an MG-style flat-bottom steering wheel with perforated leather grips at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions, balancing sportiness and refinement.
The MG Ei5 offers multiple powertrain configurations depending on the market. Early overseas versions of the MG 5 EV are powered by a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering 116 to 156 PS and 255 to 260 Nm of torque. The 2021 facelift model upgraded to an improved front electric motor generating 135 kW (approx. 184 PS) and 280 Nm, completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in 8.3 seconds with a top speed of 185 km/h.
In terms of driving range, earlier overseas variants with a 52.2–52.5 kWh battery pack deliver a WLTP range of 344 km. Following the facelift, the car received a larger 61 kWh ternary lithium battery pack, raising the WLTP range to over 400 km, with DC fast charging replenishing the battery to 80% in 30 minutes. The Chinese-spec MG Ei5 is equipped with a 61.1 kWh ternary lithium-ion battery, offering an NEDC-rated range of 501 km. The vehicle also supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) reverse charging to power external appliances when stationary. Configured with a front-wheel-drive (FWD) layout, its rated energy consumption is 13.8 kWh per 100 km.
Under the skin, the MG Ei5 features front MacPherson struts paired with a rear torsion beam (or trapezoidal link) suspension setup. The chassis is tuned distinctly for ride comfort, effectively absorbing minor surface irregularities; however, its ability to cushion larger potholes or speed humps is limited, resulting in noticeable rear rebound over undulating roads, with some users noting that rear occupants may experience motion sickness. The electric power steering (EPS) setup provides a light, effortless steering feel. Braking is handled by ventilated discs up front and solid discs at the rear. Overall, the chassis setup is tailored primarily for daily urban commuting, offering predictable highway stability.
The MG Ei5 delivers a competitive level of in-car technology within its segment. It runs the Zebra Zhixing connected infotainment system (ranging from Zebra 2.0 to the VENUS platform) through an 8-inch or 10.25-inch centre touchscreen, supporting intelligent voice commands, online navigation, and multimedia streaming via Xiami Music. The digital instrument cluster displays driving metrics, turn-by-turn navigation, and real-time traffic updates. Higher-spec grades come equipped with Level 2 ADAS features, including Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Speed Assistance System (SAS), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Traffic Jam Assist (TJA), and Intelligent Headlamp Control (IHC). Front cupholders and the rotary shift dial are neatly arranged below the centre console.
On the practicality front, the MG Ei5 takes full advantage of its estate body style to provide generous boot space. Luggage capacity stands at 464 litres in its standard layout and expands to a cavernous 1,456 litres with the rear seats folded flat, easily accommodating multiple pieces of luggage for long-distance trips. The car also boasts a 500 kg towing capacity and a 75 kg roof load rating, making it easy to fit bike racks or a roof box.
The MG Ei5 is well-appointed in terms of active and passive safety features. Standard active safety aids include ABS, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). Premium variants are further equipped with the MG Pilot driver assistance suite, packing FCW, AEB, ACC, LKA, LDW, and TJA to enable Level 2 semi-autonomous driving. In addition, a 360-degree surround-view monitor with a transparent chassis function provides drivers with a clear overview of the car's surroundings when parking.
Passive safety is anchored by a high-strength cage body structure, with high-strength steel accounting for over 65% of the frame and critical sections reinforced with hot-stamped steel. Airbag configurations vary by grade, with higher-end variants fitted with dual front airbags, front side airbags, and full-length side curtain airbags. ISOFIX child seat anchors are standard across the range for family motoring needs.
Battery safety is addressed by an intelligent liquid-cooled thermal management system with IP67-rated dust and water resistance, certified through rigorous evaluations including overcharge and nail penetration tests.
The MG Ei5's market trajectory has been characterized by strong overseas demand in stark contrast to its quiet domestic performance. In China, its heavy association with fleet and commercial duties limited its appeal among private buyers. In Europe, however, the MG 5 EV found a solid following as a rare, budget-friendly electric estate—neatly occupying the gap between mid-to-large petrol wagons and premium electric estates. Notably, a high-mileage MG 5 EV fleet vehicle in the UK logged over 100,000 miles (approx. 160,000 km) with only 6% battery degradation, minimal brake pad wear, and zero signs of mechanical fatigue, demonstrating commendable real-world reliability.
