2026-09-21 03:40:06

The MG HS PHEV (also marketed overseas as the MG HS Plug-in Hybrid, or Super Hybrid in Australia and selected Asia-Pacific markets) serves as SAIC Motor's technological benchmark and export flagship in the upper-C-segment/mid-size SUV category under the MG brand.

As an all-new generational leap integrating SAIC's latest electrified powertrain and variable-frequency electric drive system, the MG HS PHEV delivers a major technological breakthrough. Bidding farewell to the converted ICE-to-hybrid layout of its predecessor, it transitions into a dedicated hybrid architecture defined by a large battery pack and ultra-long pure electric range. Boasting an EV range exceeding 100 km (WLTP-rated at up to 120 km / 75 miles), it consecutively clinched the Best Plug-in Hybrid SUV title at the UK's prestigious What Car? Awards for 2025 and 2026. Across major global markets including Europe, Australia, and ASEAN, it spearheads MG's international assault against formidable rivals like the Toyota RAV4 PHEV, BYD Sealion 6, and Kia Sportage PHEV.

Model Overview

The fundamental engineering ethos of the MG HS PHEV centres on delivering near-EV levels of whisper-quiet refinement and ultra-low energy consumption, outclassing conventional non-plug-in hybrid rivals.

Dimensionally, the next-gen model has grown substantially to measure 4,670 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,663 mm in height, with a generous wheelbase ranging between 2,750 mm and 2,765 mm (subject to market-specific chassis setups). This transformation yields a genuinely spacious, wide-body C+ segment cabin.

Styling-wise, the newcomer sports MG's latest "shark-hunting" black matrix front grille, paired with razor-sharp "Hunting Eye" LED headlamps and a full-width light bar taillight inspired by the fractured glass architecture of London's The Shard. Key highlights include a segment-leading 21.4 kWh to 24.7 kWh high-capacity battery pack, a potent 272 PS power output, and a high-tech dual 12.3-inch HD integrated display setup.

Development History

First-generation pioneer with 10-speed EDU (2020–2023): The original MG HS PHEV (previously known as the MG eHS in China) featured a 1.5-litre turbo engine paired with a 10-speed EDU intelligent electric drive transmission and a 16.6 kWh ternary lithium-ion battery. As one of China's earliest mass-exported PHEV SUVs, it paved the way for MG's hybrid portfolio across key markets, notably the UK, continental Europe, and Thailand's right-hand-drive market.

Generational overhaul and big-battery transition (2024–2025): Built upon SAIC's all-new dedicated hybrid platform, the model underwent a full generational redesign. The game-changing highlight was the adoption of a high-thermal-efficiency dedicated hybrid engine alongside a significantly larger battery pack, effectively doubling pure electric range from the previous 50 km bracket to an impressive 100–120 km (WLTP cycle), making strong waves across mature global markets.

Global benchmark status (2026): In its current iteration, the MG HS PHEV has cemented its position as a global PHEV frontrunner. Customer deliveries are in full swing across the UK (featuring SE and Trophy variants), Southern/Central Europe, and Australia (offering Excite Super Hybrid and Essence Super Hybrid trims). Backed by remarkably low running costs even in charge-depleted hybrid mode and a comprehensive 7-year/unlimited-mileage factory warranty, it firmly holds a spot in the top tier of premium PHEV SUVs globally.

Market Performance

The MG HS PHEV targets eco-conscious, middle-class families seeking premium appeal and value. While setting a high-tech benchmark for the brand domestically, it serves as a disruptive force in overseas markets. In Europe with its stringent carbon tax policies, and in Australia where long-distance touring is highly prized, the SUV's ability to easily surpass 1,000 km on a single tank and charge has successfully lured buyers away from established legacy rivals.

Core Technologies

The MG HS PHEV incorporates SAIC Motor's pinnacle engineering assets across dedicated hybrid thermal management, a high-capacity and ultra-safe EV electrical architecture, and five-star global active/passive safety systems:

Spacious, premium cabin and boot utility: Thanks to its 1,890 mm wide body and 2,750+ mm wheelbase, rear shoulder room and legroom set a benchmark for the segment. Standard boot capacity stands at 507 litres, expandable to 1,484 litres with the rear seats folded flat. Complemented by a smart powered tailgate with anti-pinch protection and hands-free kick sensor, it effortlessly accommodates full family holiday luggage.

Next-generation Super Hybrid dedicated powertrain:

High thermal efficiency engine: Centred around a dedicated 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine producing 142–143 PS, delivering an impressive thermal efficiency rating of 43%.

High-output electric motor: Paired with a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous traction motor generating 135 kW (183 PS), alongside a dedicated 110 kW (150 PS) generator motor.

Potent combined output: Combined system output peaks at 200 kW (272 PS) and a hefty 430–480 Nm of torque. Channeled via a lightweight 2-speed/3-speed adaptive dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT), the 0–100 km/h sprint is dispatched in just 6.8 seconds.

Class-leading EV range and fuel efficiency:
