Development History

Obvio! was established in 2001 with the visionary goal of solving two massive modern metropolitan crises simultaneously: crushing urban traffic congestion and rising carbon emissions. To accomplish this, founder Ricardo Machado teamed up with legendary Portuguese-Brazilian automotive designer Anísio Campos (the mastermind behind many iconic mid-century Brazilian sports cars) and the prominent aerospace composite manufacturing firm Equisul.

The company developed two interconnected flagship models:

  • The Obvio! 828: A ultra-compact, egg-shaped urban microcar heavily inspired by a famous 1980s micro-vehicle concept previously designed by Anísio Campos (the Dacon 828).
  • The Obvio! 012: A slightly larger, high-performance, aggressively styled urban sports vehicle designed for highway commuting.

Technical Profile and the American Export Vision

Under the skin, Obvio! vehicles were marvels of advanced material engineering:

  • The NiSMC Chassis: Instead of a traditional heavy steel frame, the cars utilized a proprietary "Ring Structure" survival cell crafted from Natural Fiber Reinforced Bio-Composite (NiSMC). This made the microcars extraordinarily light yet strong enough to pass rigorous United States crash-testing standards.
  • The Three-Passenger Layout: Both models featured a highly unique, wide three-abreast seating arrangement (similar to the legendary McLaren F1 supercar), allowing three adults to sit side-by-side in a vehicle under 3 metres in length.
  • The Powertrain and the ZAP Partnership: Early prototypes were engineered with a 1.6-litre, 115 hp Tritec engine (the same engine used in early BMW MINIs) running on Brazil's ubiquitous E85 bio-ethanol flexible-fuel setup. In 2005, Obvio! signed a massive $1.2 billion distribution contract with the American electric vehicle pioneer ZAP to mass-produce and export fully electric versions of the 828 and 012 to the United States market.

Despite securing thousands of advanced US pre-orders through ZAP, Obvio! struggled immensely to secure the necessary long-term industrial capital within Brazil to set up its mass-production assembly lines. Following the global financial collapse of 2007–2008 and subsequent funding gridlocks, the project stalled completely before commercial mass production could commence.

Historical Significance

Obvio! holds immense historical weight as a prophetic pioneer of the modern smart-car and micro-mobility movements. Long before the global explosion of modern electric city-cars, Obvio! successfully predicted the necessity of lightweight, composite-bodied, high-safety urban commuters.

Its use of eco-friendly bio-resins and natural fibers in chassis construction was decades ahead of its time. Today, the surviving Obvio! prototypes are celebrated as masterclasses in high-concept South American automotive industrial design, embodying the bold spirit of independent Brazilian engineering.
