Volvo XC90 PHEV

2026-10-19 11:30:01

The Volvo XC90 PHEV (plug-in hybrid) is the flagship mid-to-large luxury SUV from Volvo Cars, sold in the domestic market as a fully imported (CBU) model. On 11 November 2025, the 2026 Volvo XC90 officially went on sale with a total of seven variants. Among these, the plug-in hybrid (T8) line-up comprises two 7-seater variants: the T8 Zhiyuan Luxury Edition priced at RM795,900, and the T8 Zhizun Luxury Edition priced at RM894,900. Serving as a crucial transition model in Volvo’s "Full Electrification by 2030" roadmap, the XC90 PHEV retains the marque’s core safety DNA while delivering a balance of performance and eco-friendliness via plug-in hybrid technology, standing as the flagship benchmark of the brand’s electrification shift.

Design Language

The 2026 XC90 PHEV retains Volvo's signature Scandinavian minimalist styling while receiving noticeable exterior refinements. The most distinctive update is up front, where the front grille's vertical slats have been replaced with a contemporary diagonal mesh insert that seamlessly flows into the redesigned, hollowed-out "Thor's Hammer" LED headlamps for a sharper, more commanding stance. A revised full-width front bumper features vertical trim garnishes on both flanks, adding greater visual depth to the front fascia. Dimensionally, the SUV measures 4,953 mm in length and 1,958 mm in width, with an overall height of either 1,772 mm or 1,776 mm depending on the spec, riding on a 2,984 mm wheelbase. The side profile retains its clean, upright, and rugged silhouette, featuring a revised, irregularly shaped charging port flap on the driver-side front fender replacing the previous circular design. At the rear, the vehicle keeps its concealed exhaust layout alongside the T8 plug-in hybrid badge, complemented by refreshed LED tail lamp graphics. Inside, the cabin layout takes cues from the all-electric Volvo EX90, adopting a larger freestanding portrait infotainment touchscreen while maintaining essential physical rotary dials and quick-access buttons below. The refreshed centre console now integrates a front storage cubby with an integrated wireless smartphone charging pad. Range-topping models are further elevated by an exquisite Orrefors crystal gear selector, enhancing the cabin's bespoke luxury ambience.

Powertrain & Performance

The XC90 PHEV is powered by Volvo’s T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain, pairing a 2.0-litre high-output turbocharged petrol engine with a rear-axle electric motor. The combustion engine produces a maximum output of 228 kW (310 PS / 308 hp) and 400 Nm of torque, while the rear electric motor delivers 107 kW and 309 Nm. Together, the system develops a potent combined output of 335 kW (approximately 455 PS / 449 hp) and 709 Nm of total torque, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. It completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in a brisk 5.4 seconds alongside impressive top-end performance. Energy is stored in an 18.8 kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack, providing an all-electric driving range of up to 84 km on the CLTC cycle and 70 km under WLTP testing. The total combined cruising range exceeds 800 km. When plugged into a 6.4 kW AC wallbox, a full 0-100% charge takes roughly 3 hours.

Chassis and Handling

The XC90 PHEV is underpinned by Volvo's Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) modular platform. Power is delivered via an intelligent electric all-wheel drive (e-AWD) setup—the petrol engine drives the front wheels, while the dedicated rear motor powers the rear axle independently. Higher-spec variants come equipped with an adaptive air suspension system that actively modulates ride height to suit various road conditions and driving dynamics. Steering is handled by an electric power steering (EPS) system, while braking performance is managed by ventilated discs all round paired with an electronic parking brake (EPB). Drivers can select from several drive modes—including Pure (EV), Hybrid, and Power (Sport)—tailored to meet the demands of urban daily commutes as well as long-distance touring.

Cabin and Features

The interior of the XC90 PHEV blends Scandinavian minimalism with advanced technology, featuring a full digital instrument cluster and a prominent portrait-oriented touchscreen as standard across the range. Powered by the latest Google-based Android Automotive OS, the system natively integrates AutoNavi navigation, over-the-air (OTA) software update support, and Apple CarPlay smartphone connectivity. Top-tier variants add a Head-Up Display (HUD). Seating comes in a practical 2+3+2 seven-seat configuration, where the three second-row seats are individually designed and split-foldable to expand cargo flexibility. Boot capacity on this 7-seater PHEV expands from 298 litres up to a cavernous 1,941 litres with the rear seats folded. Audiophiles will appreciate the bespoke Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system fitted to higher-spec trims. Other creature comforts include a panoramic power sunroof, wireless smartphone charging, four-zone automatic climate control, as well as heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Safety remains the paramount pillar of the Volvo brand. The XC90 PHEV comes standard with the full City Safety suite, incorporating comprehensive autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with multi-scenario hazard detection. Driver assistance is delivered via the Pilot Assist system, providing Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities with intelligent adaptive cruise control and lane centring assist across the 0-130 km/h speed envelope. Standard active safety equipment across the range includes Road Sign Information (RSI), Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with steer assist, and Lane Departure Warning (LDW). Higher-end trims are equipped with millimetre-wave radar sensors to provide 360-degree environmental perception. Passive safety is well covered by a comprehensive airbag matrix, including driver’s knee airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Furthermore, from the 2025 model year onwards, the rear seatbelt load limiters have been upgraded to enhance rear-occupant protection during moderate overlap frontal impact tests.

Market Performance and Verdict

The XC90 PHEV continues to demonstrate robust sales momentum globally. Volvo's plug-in hybrid deliveries surged from approximately 46,000 units in 2019 to over 177,000 units in 2024, primarily driven by strong demand for the XC60 and XC90 PHEV across three core markets: Europe, the US, and China. By October 2025, Volvo’s cumulative global PHEV sales surpassed the one-million-unit milestone. Nonetheless, in China's competitive landscape, the XC90 PHEV faces intense rivalry from heavyweight contenders such as the locally assembled BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, and Audi Q7. Market analysts highlight that the XC90's baseline entry price of RM638,900 offers limited pricing leverage against established German rivals; while the T8 PHEV’s RM795,900 to RM894,900 price bracket delivers stellar performance, its brand prestige still has to battle head-to-head with the German "BBA" trio. Nevertheless, as Volvo’s flagship luxury SUV, the XC90 PHEV maintains enduring appeal among discerning buyers prioritising class-leading safety, sophisticated Scandinavian styling, and sustainable mobility.
