Spied! RHD version of the BYD Dolphin spied, any luck for Malaysia?

BYD’s on a roll with its export models, as spyshots from RedNote recently surfaced hinting at a right-hand drive (RHD) version of the new BYD Dolphin G.

What is the BYD Dolphin G?

Debuted back in May 2026, the BYD Dolphin G is BYD’s first model that has aspirations beyond its domestic Chinese market, as the model was developed specifically for export markets and not adapted from a Chinese model.

The Dolphin G is a B-segment hatchback aimed at well-established rivals such as the Volkswagen Polo, Peugeot 208, and Opel Corsa. However, unlike some of its pure-ICE rivals, the Dolphin G is fitted with BYD’s Dual Mode-Intelligent (DM-i) petrol-electric hybrid powertrain.

The DM-i powertrain in the Dolphin G consists of a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that does 95 PS and 120 Nm, mated to a dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT). Combined system output is 176 PS and 210 Nm for the base variant with the small 7.42 kWh BYD Blade battery pack.

Opt for the larger 18.3 kWh BYD Blade battery pack and power output jumps to 212 PS. BYD claims that the Dolphin G is able to return over 1,000 km under the WLTP test cycle.

Any luck for Malaysia?

At this moment, it’s too soon to say if and when the Dolphin G arrives here. Plus, the model is scheduled to be manufactured in BYD’s Hungary plant for the European market.

Factoring in the cost of the DM-i powertrain and BYD’s uncertain CKD future in Malaysia, the Dolphin G may not be in their local line-up anytime soon.
