Proton S70 Taxi debuts in Malaysia – 1.5T Premium, Taxi and e-hailing

Say hello to the latest taxi in Malaysia – the Proton S70 now joins the ranks of the Proton Wira and Proton Iswara to be Malaysia’s taxi.

Under the newly-introduced Program Pembaharuan Teksi Madani Nasional launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the Proton S70 is now Malaysia’s latest taxi.

The Proton S70 Taxi seen here receives a number of modifications compared to the regular ones, including a pair of taxi/e-hailing signs, as well as a digital taxi display that replaces the traditional roof-mounted taxi sign that we're accustomed to. Said digital taxi display is able to display 'Teksi' or 'E-Hailing'.

Furthermore, the Proton S70 Taxi can be identified by its new GET series number plate. The GET series plate is the second standardized number plate after the EV-specific number plates that was introduced a couple of years ago. If anyone's wondering, GET stands for 'Gabungan E-hailing dan Teksi'. 

Inside, the Proton X70 Taxi adds a display that serves as a digital taximeter, as well as an advertisement panel which can be an additional source of income for the taxi driver. We understand that the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) is currently evaluating several vendors and their respective systems.

During his speech, PM Anwar revealed that the government has prepared a RM 10 million matching grant, consisting of:

• Up to RM 2,000 from Proton
• Up to RM 2,000 from the government

Furthermore, to entice more taxi drivers to trade in their old taxi, the government is offering easy financing options to make sure that the driver gets to own the taxi. Other perks include that taxi drivers will get priority during vehicle inspection at Puspakom or other inspection centres and exemption from excise and sales tax. On top of that, the taxi drivers can also use the S70 Taxi as their own personal vehicle.
