BMW is once again in the spotlight following the latest vehicle registration filings released by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
As one of BMW's key models based on the all-new Neue Klasse electric vehicle platform, the long-wheelbase version of the BMW iX3 (BMW iX3 50L xDrive) has had its official energy consumption and driving range figures revealed.

According to figures certified by MIIT, the BMW iX3 50L xDrive achieves a CLTC-rated driving range of 919 km, with an average energy consumption of just 13.6 kWh per 100 km.

These figures not only exceed market expectations, but also highlight BMW's growing capabilities in the electric vehicle sector.
More importantly for Malaysian BMW enthusiasts, the long-wheelbase electric SUV is not exclusive to the Chinese market.

According to BMW's global product strategy, the model will be produced at the Shenyang plant in China primarily for the Chinese market, while also being introduced to markets like India, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Before the 919 km CLTC range was officially confirmed, the long-wheelbase BMW iX3 50L xDrive had already undergone an extremely demanding real-world range test.
Earlier, a BMW iX3 50L xDrive prototype took on a long-distance driving challenge around Qinghai Lake in China without recharging.

Starting from Xining at an altitude of around 2,200 metres, the test vehicle climbed to nearly 4,000 metres above sea level, navigating through heavy snow, heavy rain and intense sunlight.
Despite challenging weather conditions, a roughly 2,000-metre elevation change and complex terrain, the prototype completed an 800 km-plus Qinghai Lake loop on a single charge.

When the vehicle returned to its starting point in Xining, the battery still had 2% charge remaining, while average energy consumption stood at just 12.6 kWh/100 km.

While the Qinghai Lake endurance test demonstrated the vehicle's real-world efficiency and reliability under harsh conditions, the official 919 km CLTC range provides a benchmark-certified figure under China's regulatory testing standards.

The combination of official range certification and extreme-condition testing highlights BMW's approach to electric efficiency — proving that true long-range capability is not just about achieving an impressive number in controlled environments, but delivering consistent confidence across different driving conditions.

The impressive range and ultra-low energy consumption come from BMW's all-new Neue Klasse EV architecture, which moves beyond the limitations of traditional combustion-based platforms adapted for electric powertrains.
Sixth-generation technology and large cylindrical batteries
The model is equipped with BMW's sixth-generation high-voltage battery system, featuring newly developed large cylindrical cells and Cell-to-Pack (CTP) technology.
With a battery capacity of 108.7 kWh, the battery pack achieves higher energy density while maintaining an optimal balance between vehicle weight, structural rigidity and efficiency.

Efficient electric powertrain and energy recovery
The new-generation electric drive system combines a wound-field synchronous motor with an asynchronous motor, reducing energy losses by 40% while improving overall system efficiency by 20%.
Working together with BMW's in-house developed "Heart of Joy" supercomputing control unit and advanced energy recuperation system, the vehicle can recover braking energy in up to 98% of everyday driving situations, converting kinetic energy during deceleration and downhill driving into usable electrical energy.

800V architecture and ultra-fast charging
Built on an 800V high-voltage platform, the Neue Klasse BMW iX3 delivers both extended range and rapid charging performance.
When using BMW's official charging infrastructure, the model supports a peak charging rate of over 400 kW, adding around 400 km of range in just 10 minutes. A 10%-to-80% fast charge takes only 21 minutes.
As a long-wheelbase (LWB) model tailored for markets that demand extra space, the Neue Klasse BMW iX3 caters perfectly to the aesthetic and practical needs of modern families.
Futuristic exterior design
The front end features a prominent 3D illuminated kidney grille and new digital "angel eye" headlamps. The side profile boasts clean lines, replacing the traditional Hofmeister kink with a unique "Mirror-Light Corner" design.

Measuring 4,885 mm long, 1,895 mm wide, and 1,635 mm tall, the EV features a 3,005 mm wheelbase (108 mm longer than the standard model) and comes with semi-hidden power door handles.
At the rear, the design is completed by 3D wing-shaped taillights and an optimised spoiler, with up to nine exterior colour options available.

Thanks to the dedicated EV platform, the extended wheelbase is fully utilised to maximise rear passenger space.

Practicality is further improved with front and rear luggage compartments, offering up to 1,900 litres of cargo capacity when expanded.

The biggest upgrade comes from BMW's Panoramic Vision Bridge and 3D Head-Up Display.

Using ultra-short-focus projection technology, the system projects an almost 40-inch 4K panoramic display seamlessly onto the lower section of the windscreen.

The centre console is equipped with a 17.9-inch high-resolution touchscreen, angled 17.5 degrees towards the driver for easier operation.

The infotainment system is deeply integrated with popular local digital ecosystems. In addition to supporting Apple CarPlay, it also incorporates advanced AI large language models with enhanced reasoning capabilities, enabling more natural and intelligent voice interactions.
Co-developed by BMW and Momenta, the driving assistance suite utilises end-to-end AI models to handle complex urban environments, highway driving and challenging road conditions. It provides advanced driver assistance features while enhancing active safety through intelligent risk avoidance.
With pre-orders for the long-wheelbase Neue Klasse BMW iX3 set to open at the 2026 Chengdu Motor Show ahead of deliveries in China by the fourth quarter of this year, the model's global rollout plan is taking shape.
