2026 Chengdu Motor Show: Could the new Boyue L i-HEV hint at what's next for the Proton X70?

Geely has given the Boyue L a new look for the 2026 Chengdu Motor Show, with the latest fourth-generation i-HEV version finished in a new purple colour and fitted with a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor.

The updated SUV will be officially unveiled on 21 August, but it was already on display when we visited the show venue ahead of the opening.

The Boyue L will be familiar to Malaysians as our Proton X70 shares its origins with the Geely SUV. This latest i-HEV version adds Geely's i-HEV hybrid system and G-ASD advanced driver assistance system.

Geely i-HEV hybrid system

Geely introduced its i-HEV hybrid technology in April, and the system has since made its way into models such as the Xingrui, Xingyue L and fifth-generation Emgrand.

The Boyue L i-HEV is the latest model to get the powertrain, adding a hybrid version to one of Geely's best-known SUV nameplates.

The Boyue series has topped China's A-segment (C-segment in Malaysia) petrol SUV sales for 12 consecutive months as of June 2026.

Global sales over the past 12 months are close to 260,000 units, while the nameplate has sold more than 2.43 million units worldwide over the past decade, across more than 60 countries.

What Geely i-HEV brings

The i-HEV system uses a dedicated hybrid engine with a claimed 48.41% thermal efficiency, while Geely's Xingrui AI Cloud Power 2.0 model is used to manage the powertrain.

It also uses the GEEA 3.0 electrical architecture and an 11-in-1 hybrid drive unit with a maximum output of 230kW.

Based on WLTC data, the electric motor powers the car for almost 80% of the cycle. It therefore feels surprisingly close to an EV, particularly when pulling away or sitting in traffic.

The response is quick and the power delivery is smooth, giving it a more immediate and refined feel than a conventional petrol car.

Battery safety

The new Boyue L i-HEV comes with Geely's Aegis Battery Safety System, and is built to meet the latest battery safety standards.

The battery has undergone 15,000 hours of bench testing, equivalent to around 4.8 million kilometres of vehicle testing. The tests covered extreme conditions across five continents, including hot and wet environments similar to those in Malaysia.

The Boyue L i-HEV is currently a China-market model, but its close connection to the Proton X70 makes it one to keep an eye on here in Malaysia.
