2027 T34 Nissan Rogue Hybrid debuts in the US with e-Power – a preview of Malaysia's next X-Trail?

Nissan has unveiled the new 2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid, the latest version of the SUV better known as the X-Trail in markets such as Malaysia. The new model gets Nissan's latest e-POWER hybrid system, along with a series of upgrades to its in-car technology.

The Rogue is one of Nissan's core SUVs worldwide, with almost 4 million units sold globally across previous generations. For the new hybrid, the main changes are found in the powertrain and technology.

e-POWER hybrid

The new Rogue Hybrid uses Nissan's e-POWER system, which works differently from a conventional hybrid. Its turbocharged petrol engine does not drive the wheels. Instead, it generates electricity, while an electric motor handles the actual driving.

The result is an EV-like driving setup, with instant torque, quick responses off the line and linear acceleration. With no mechanical connection between the engine and wheels, the system also reduces engine noise and vibration compared with a conventional petrol-electric hybrid.

Nissan first introduced e-POWER in 2016, and the system has since been used in nearly 2 million vehicles across 68 markets.

For the North American market, Nissan has also tuned the system specifically for local road conditions and driving habits.

Built in Japan

The new Rogue Hybrid will be assembled at Nissan's Kyushu plant in Japan. North American deliveries are scheduled to begin in autumn 2026, starting with the SR AWD. Other versions will arrive at dealerships in early 2027.

The cabin gets a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen as standard, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Higher-spec versions get a larger 14.3-inch screen and, for the first time, an integrated Google ecosystem with Google Maps, Google Play and Google Gemini.

What about Malaysia?

Malaysian buyers have been waiting for the latest X-Trail for some time.

Nissan distributor Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) first showed the T33 Nissan X-Trail at KLIMS 2024. After two years, the SUV has made another public appearance, adding to expectations that the Malaysian launch is getting closer.

Based on local industry sources and plans previously disclosed by ETCM, the T33 X-Trail is expected to launch in Malaysia in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The Malaysian-spec model is expected to use a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged engine as part of the e-POWER system, with the engine generating electricity rather than driving the wheels. It is also expected to get Nissan's e-4ORCE all-wheel-drive system.

With the Malaysian launch drawing closer, it will be interesting to see how the new X-Trail performs against its rivals once it arrives.
