BYD has joined the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), officially becoming a member on 14 September 2026.
The company has pledged to support and implement the UNGC's Ten Principles, while integrating the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its day-to-day operations and core business strategy. The move forms part of BYD's wider efforts to support global decarbonisation and sustainable development.

Established in 2000, the UN Global Compact is the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative. It encourages businesses to incorporate sustainability principles into their everyday operations and promote responsible business practices, in line with the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The initiative has more than 25,000 corporate participants across over 160 countries, bringing businesses together to address environmental and social challenges worldwide.

BYD has built an international presence across more than 100 countries and regions, with sustainability a central part of its long-term strategy. Under its vision to "Cooling the Earth by 1°C", the company has set several environmental and social targets.
Ending production of conventional petrol and diesel cars
In 2022, BYD became one of the first major automotive manufacturers to discontinue production of conventional petrol and diesel vehicles worldwide, focusing instead on new energy vehicles.
Targeting carbon neutrality by 2045
BYD aims to achieve carbon neutrality across its entire value chain by 2045.
Introducing its DREAMS sustainability strategy
In 2025, BYD launched its DREAMS sustainability strategy, covering green and low-carbon development, innovation and transformation, equal opportunities, collaboration, integrity and shared value.
According to the company, BYD sold 4.6 million new energy vehicles in 2025, helping to reduce carbon emissions by 46.6 million tonnes. It equates this reduction to the amount of carbon absorbed by approximately 776 million trees.
Beyond environmental initiatives, BYD has also established an RMB 3 billion education charity fund (approximately RM 1.838 billion), supporting university scholarships and educational programmes focused on new energy vehicle technology.

Joining the UN Global Compact marks another step in BYD's efforts to strengthen its environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitments.
The company says it will continue to follow the UNGC's principles, promote responsible corporate governance and work with partners throughout its global value chain to support a more sustainable future.
