Ford Bronco New Energy confirmed for Australia – could Malaysia be next?

The Ford Bronco, once a left-hand drive (LHD)-exclusive model, may be headed to right-hand drive (RHD) markets in the near future.

According to a recent report by Drive, Ford Australia may actually be considering the Bronco for the Down Under market.

That said, we need to set the record straight – the Bronco they’re referring to isn’t the ladder frame Bronco, nor is it the Bronco Sport.

Instead, the Bronco that Ford Australia may have plans for is the Bronco New Energy – a China-market derivative model developed on a unibody architecture. The New Energy part of the name hints at the powertrain – the Bronco New Energy can be had either as a battery electric vehicle (BEV) or range-extender electric vehicle (REEV).

The nugget of information was reportedly leaked by a Brisbane-based dealer, which apparently jumped the gun with the Bronco’s Australia arrival, mentioning that the model is “Coming soon”.

Furthermore, according to Wheelsboy, a China-based English Yotube channel, he mentioned that the Bronco New Energy is headed to markets like “Australia, Southeast Asia, South America, and the Middle East”. Considering that he was at the Bronco New Energy’s media drive, he likely got that information from a Ford rep.

Closer to home, the Bronco New Energy would be an interesting addition to their two-car line-up. At the time of writing, Ford Malaysia only offers the Ranger and Everest, both of which are either petrol- or diesel-powered. An electrified model could attract a new demography of buyers to the Blue Oval, as the company has never offered an electrified model in its history here.
