GWM WEY teases new boxy SUV with LiDAR and retro off-road styling

GWM WEY has revealed the official images of a new boxy SUV, although the model has yet to be given an official name. The new SUV will add another model to WEY's line-up, with more details expected to follow.

WEY CEO Zhao Yongpo previously described the model as a new take on the luxury boxy SUV, aimed at creating a distinct product in a segment that the company sees as largely untapped.

The exterior follows the familiar upright proportions of a rugged SUV. At the front, a lit-up WEY badge sits between a pair of round headlights, a design commonly associated with traditional off-road SUVs.

A LiDAR sensor can also be seen on the roof, pointing to the use of a more advanced driver-assistance system.

From the side, the design is dominated by straight lines and sharp edges rather than large curved surfaces, giving the SUV the classic boxy profile.

The short front overhang, long wheelbase and tall body also give it a more upright stance. At the rear, WEY has kept the square proportions and added vertically stacked polygon-shaped tail-lights along with a rear-mounted spare wheel.

Could it come to Malaysia?

GWM has been expanding its presence overseas, and Malaysia is one of its key markets in Southeast Asia.

In March, GWM Malaysia announced a three-year plan covering 2026 to 2028, with the company targeting a place among Malaysia's top 10 automotive brands by 2028 and aiming to become one of the country's three largest Chinese car brands.

WEY is one of GWM's four core brands in Malaysia, alongside Haval, Tank and Ora.

GWM has also been expanding its range of powertrain technologies in Malaysia, including its Hi4 hybrid system.

That makes the new WEY SUV an interesting one to watch, particularly as GWM continues to broaden its local line-up. There is no confirmation yet that this unnamed model is planned for Malaysia, however.

For reference, WEY currently sells one model in Malaysia:

GWM Wey G9: RM 269,800

Estimated below RM 60,000?? There's two new entry-level Proton S70 variants coming soon, with prices that would make you reconsider other options. Out goes the turbo engine, the S70 Lite and Prime get the Saga MC3's NA 1.5L i-GT engine instead. No DCT too, replaced by a CVT. #proton #protonS70 1 minute ago Xiaomi to the world!
