Honda becomes world's first company to receive the highest 5-Star FIA Road Safety Index rating

Honda has become the first company in the world to receive the highest possible 5-star rating in the Products/Services rating of the FIA Road Safety Index, announced on September 8.

The achievement was recognised during the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Italy in September.

What is FIA Road Safety Index?

As the governing body for world motor sport and the federation of the world's leading motoring organisations, the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) introduced the Road Safety Index to help businesses and organisations assess, manage, improve and report on their Road Safety Footprint.

The index measures two key areas:

Supply Chain Rating: Covers a company's entire operations, from raw material sourcing and product development to manufacturing and final delivery to customers.

Products/Services Rating: Focuses specifically on the safety performance of products and services.

In the latest assessment, Honda achieved the highest possible 5-star rating in the Products/Services category.

Honda's assessment expanded to 17 markets

Back in February 2025, Honda had become the first carmaker to receive the FIA's top 3-star rating, based on its performance in Japan.

After the FIA upgraded the index to a stricter 5-star system — adding areas such as safety planning, performance monitoring and safety culture management — Honda expanded the assessment to 17 markets.

The markets include Japan, the US, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Türkiye, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, the Philippines and Brazil, representing more than 90% of Honda's global motorcycle and automobile sales.

The FIA assessment recognised Honda's PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) safety management system and its approach to improving road safety.

Why Honda received the 5-star rating

Honda was recognised for:

1. Strong leadership and long-term commitment to implementing its global safety strategy

2. Global accident data analysis to monitor and understand road collision fatalities and injuries

3. Safety governance through its global safety committee, integrating safety targets into its sustainability framework

4. Wider adoption of advanced safety technologies and efforts to build a stronger safety culture

5. Greater transparency in sharing road safety-related information

Honda targets zero traffic fatalities by 2050

Under its global safety slogan "Safety for Everyone", Honda aims to create a society where all road users are protected from traffic collisions. The company has set two major targets:

By 2030: Reduce global traffic collision fatalities and injuries involving Honda motorcycles and automobiles per 10,000 vehicles sold by 50% compared with 2020.

By 2050: Achieve zero traffic collision fatalities involving Honda motorcycles and automobiles worldwide.

Honda said it will continue using real-world accident data to verify the effectiveness of its safety technologies and contribute to improving road safety.
