Malaysia vehicle theft alert: How gangs clone keys in minutes and how to protect your car

Car owners in Malaysia are being warned about increasingly sophisticated theft methods, with some gangs able to clone a vehicle's key and drive it away in just two to five minutes.

Datuk M. Kumar, Director of the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department, said thieves are increasingly using electronic devices to get around vehicle security systems.

Police said the gangs usually go after vehicles that are in strong demand and therefore easier to sell. Stolen motorcycles and lorries are often taken to illegal workshops, where they are stripped and sold as parts.

Cars can take a different route. Some are given new identities, modified and sold on, while others are broken down for parts. Some are also smuggled out of Malaysia, with Thailand among the destinations.

Malaysia recorded 12,599 vehicle theft cases in 2025, down from 14,201 in 2024. That was an 11.3% drop, although the overall number of cases remains high.

Between 2024 and July 2026, police recorded 33,716 vehicle theft cases nationwide, with total losses estimated at RM 682 million.

Police also said they had busted 104 theft gangs, arrested 579 people and recovered 10,693 stolen vehicles during the same period. A total of 386 people have been charged.

What owners can do

Police are also reminding owners that a factory security system is not necessarily enough to keep thieves out.

Where possible, park in a well-lit area, preferably somewhere with CCTV (closed-circuit television) or security guards. A steering wheel lock, pedal lock or GPS tracker can add another layer of security.

Never leave the car running while it is unattended. Owners should also keep their smart keys secure and switch on any available tracking and notification features.

With thieves making greater use of electronic tools, simple habits can still make a difference when it comes to protecting your car.
