On 21 August, in conjunction with the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Kuala Lumpur 2026 held at The Exchange TRX, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia unveiled a car that instantly turned every camera lens in its direction.
The Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series.
Estimated pricing starts from RM2,250,000. That is excluding insurance, options, and the mental preparation you might need after looking at the price tag.
This is no ordinary SL with a Maybach badge slapped on it.
Maybach has retuned the suspension, steering, and chassis control systems, aiming for a ride that is more comfortable and elegant than the SL, rather than aggressive.
On the hardware front, it retains the AMG Active Ride Control suspension, carbon-ceramic brakes, and an electronic rear-axle limited-slip differential.
However, Maybach has intentionally softened the throttle response. Switch to Comfort or Maybach mode, and the instrument cluster will remind you: Please drive calmly, smoothly, and elegantly.
In other words, this car is capable of performance, but it would much rather you glide slowly past the lobby of a luxury hotel, rather than chase lap times.
The on-paper figures are respectable.
A 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 585 hp and 800 Nm of torque, paired with a nine-speed transmission and 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive. The 0-100 km/h sprint is completed in 4.1-seconds, on its way to a top speed of 260 km/h.
This would qualify as a serious performance car in any other context. But buyers of the Maybach SL 680 are highly unlikely to test these figures. They are more concerned with whether the neck-warming heating system is comfortable enough when the soft top is folded down.
This car isn't built to race; it's built to be seen.
Maybach has adopted a simple philosophy for this car: put the double-M logo everywhere humanly possible.
Up front, there is the Maybach-exclusive vertical-slat chrome grille with an illuminated surround. The black bonnet is covered in a graphite grey double-M Monogram pattern, requiring a highly complex finishing process.
Maybach badges are also tucked into the taillights, while the soft top features the same Maybach pattern. The 21-inch forged wheels, brake calipers, door sill plates, and even the key fob are all stamped with the double-M logo.
Two dual-tone themes are offered at launch: Red Ambience features black paired with garnet red, while White Ambience pairs black with matte white.
If neither suits your fancy, Maybach offers a wide array of bespoke paint finishes inspired by gemstones, fashion, and architecture. As long as you are willing to pay, any colour is possible.
Inside, it is even more extravagant. Crystal White Nappa leather covers the seats, door panels, and centre console – even the rear partition wall is white.
The headliner is finished in white microfibre, while the seat backrests receive a galvanized trim. On the tech front, it comes equipped with a Burmester high-end 3D surround sound system, a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, and an 11.9-inch infotainment screen.
A Perodua Bezza starts at RM34,580. A Proton X50 Flagship is RM113,300. A Honda Civic Type R goes for around RM330,000, while a Porsche 911 Carrera sits at approximately RM1,000,000.
For the price of a single Maybach SL 680, you could buy 65 units of the Bezza, 7 units of the Civic Type R, or 2 units of the 911 Carrera plus a Proton X50.
According to the COO of Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, this car is designed for discerning clients who value personalization and extreme attention to detail.
This car isn't for someone who just needs a car. It is for those who already own a fleet of vehicles and want something completely unique.
Malaysia certainly has no shortage of such buyers. They might be individuals whose names you have never heard, but who possess wealth beyond imagination.
The reason they buy this car isn't for its century sprint, but for the prestige of knowing that at any high-profile gala, theirs will be the only Maybach convertible parked at the entrance.
This car is highly unlikely to be seen in daily traffic. Its destiny is to sit in the garage of a luxury mansion, occasionally brought out on weekends for a leisurely cruise along the DUKE highway.
But that does not stop the rest of us from admiring it, talking about it, and calculating how many Bezzas it is worth. A RM2,250,000 convertible is expensive, but it is also fascinating.
