New BMW i7 now assembled in India, only the second market after Germany

BMW has started local assembly of the fully electric i7 in India, with production of the flagship sedan now underway at the company's Chennai plant. India is now the second country after Germany's Dingolfing plant to assemble the i7 locally.

i7 joins Chennai's local assembly line

Until now, the BMW i7 had been built exclusively at Dingolfing in Germany.

With the updated 7 Series now reaching India, BMW is introducing both petrol and electric versions locally, while also starting production of the i7 eDrive50 xDrive M Sport at its Chennai facility.

The flagship i7 M70 xDrive, however, will continue to be brought into India as a completely built-up (CBU) import.

The Chennai plant has been producing a broad range of BMW models for years. Its local assembly portfolio has included the 2 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, X1, iX1, X3, X5 and X7, many of which are also familiar to buyers in Malaysia.

The plant produced 16,380 vehicles in 2025, up 12.4% year on year.

7 Series and i7 pricing in India

BMW has also opened bookings for the new 7 Series and published its ex-showroom prices, before road tax and insurance:

  • BMW 740 M Sport: INR 19.5 million (around RM 829,000)
  • BMW i7 eDrive50 xDrive M Sport: INR 19.5 million (around RM 829,000)
  • BMW i7 M70 xDrive: INR 26.5 million (around RM 1.127 million)

Deliveries of the new 7 Series range are expected to begin at Indian BMW dealerships in October this year.

Local production of the i7 gives BMW another manufacturing base for its electric flagship outside Germany, as the company continues to expand EV production across its global network.

Proton's exploration with India isn't new, as the company has been eyeing the country since the 90s, but plans never materialized. Now that the Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim was recently in India for the 18th BRICS Leaders' Summit, could that finally be the key for Proton to enter India? #proton 1 minute ago It seems like the Tesla Roadster may be revived (again). And the (new?) Tesla Roadster will debut real soon. Too good to be true, or for real this time? 1 minute ago
