The Suzuki Fronx has become one of India's most successful export models, with more than 200,000 units shipped overseas in less than 38 months since exports began in June 2023.
Built by Maruti Suzuki in India, the compact crossover is now sold in nearly 90 countries, including Japan — a market where imported cars face fierce competition from local brands.
The Suzuki Fronx made its debut in India in April 2023. It measures 3,995 mm long, 1,765 mm wide and 1,550 mm tall, with a 2,520 mm wheelbase.
Its coupe-like roofline, angular grille and pronounced wheel arches give it a more distinctive look than the small hatchbacks traditionally associated with India's budget-car market.
Depending on the market and variant, the Fronx can be equipped with a head-up display, 360-degree camera, wireless charging pad, rear air-conditioning vents, electronic parking brake and a 9-inch touchscreen.
In India, the range includes a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine and a 1.0-litre turbocharged mild-hybrid powertrain.
One of the more unusual parts of the Fronx story is its arrival in Japan as an India-built Suzuki.
Suzuki has increasingly used its Indian operations to develop and produce models for overseas markets, and the Fronx is a good example of that strategy. More than 10,000 orders were reportedly placed in Japan shortly after its launch.
The Fronx has also set an export milestone for Maruti Suzuki.
Exports started in June 2023, and the model reached 100,000 units in less than 25 months. The next 100,000 came in roughly 13 months, taking total exports past 200,000 units in under 38 months.
The Maruti Suzuki Fronx is now exported to nearly 90 countries.
The Fronx is part of a much larger export operation at Maruti Suzuki, which has now surpassed 3 million cumulative vehicle exports.
Maruti Suzuki began exporting vehicles in 1986, followed by its first shipment of 500 cars to Hungary in 1987.
It took until the 2012-13 financial year to reach one million exports. The second million was reached in 2020-21, while the latest million took only three years and nine months.
Maruti Suzuki is now India's largest passenger vehicle exporter, accounting for close to 40% of the country's passenger vehicle exports.
The company set a monthly export record of 33,168 vehicles in October 2024 and now ships 17 models to nearly 100 countries, including the Fronx, Jimny, Baleno, Dzire and Celerio. Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East are among its key markets.
Maruti Suzuki is targeting annual exports of 750,000 vehicles by the 2030-31 financial year.

For a model built in India and sold across such a wide range of markets, the Fronx is a good example of how much Maruti Suzuki's export business has expanded. Its presence in Japan, in particular, makes the model rather different from the image many Malaysian buyers may still have of India-built cars.
