Audi SQ8 Sportback e-tron

2026-10-21 06:50:01

Model Overview

The Audi SQ8 Sportback e-tron is the flagship high-performance all-electric coupe SUV in the German brand's stable, sitting at the top of the Audi Q8 e-tron line-up. Globally unveiled in February 2023 (serving as the mid-lifecycle facelift and rebranding of the original Audi e-tron), it is Audi's premier high-performance EV outside the PPE (Premium Platform Electric) architecture, built on a heavily electrified adaptation of the MLB Evo platform. Positioned as a "high-performance all-electric coupe SUV", the SQ8 Sportback e-tron seamlessly blends SUV practicality with dynamic coupe styling, locking horns directly with the Tesla Model X Plaid, BMW iX M60, and Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV. As of 2026, the model is on sale across European and North American markets.

Design Language

On the exterior, the Audi SQ8 Sportback e-tron carries forward the Audi e-tron family design identity whilst injecting sharper, sportier cues. Up front, it sports Audi's signature enclosed Singleframe grille with a three-dimensional honeycomb mesh structure, flanked by Matrix LED headlights. Sizable air intakes on either side of the front bumper optimise cooling airflow for the battery pack and braking system. Along the sides, the defining visual element is the Sportback sweeping roofline, which slopes gracefully from the B-pillar into the integrated rear spoiler. Frameless doors and optional virtual wing mirrors further elevate its high-tech aesthetic. The rear is defined by a full-width LED light bar, with digital OLED units capable of displaying multiple dynamic lighting signatures. In terms of dimensions, it measures 4,915 mm in length, 1,976 mm in width, and 1,615 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,928 mm.

Inside, the SQ8 Sportback e-tron adopts Audi's signature triple-screen digital cockpit: a 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit instrument cluster, an upper 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a lower 8.6-inch climate control screen. The cabin is lavishly appointed with Nappa leather, Alcantara, matte carbon-fibre trim, and brushed metal accents, complemented by "S"-embossed sports seats and a flat-bottom sports steering wheel. Standard equipment includes 30-colour ambient lighting and an air quality purification system.

Power and Performance

The Audi SQ8 Sportback e-tron is driven by an electric tri-motor powertrain (one motor on the front axle and two on the rear), pushing out a combined system output of 370 kW (approx. 503 hp), which temporarily surges to 380 kW (approx. 517 hp) in Boost mode, alongside a colossal peak torque of 973 Nm. Power is sent through a two-speed automatic transmission on the rear axle and Audi's quattro electric all-wheel drive. The 0-100 km/h century sprint is dispatched in 4.4 seconds, with top speed electronically capped at 210 km/h. Energy is supplied by a 114 kWh ternary lithium battery pack (usable capacity of approx. 106 kWh), offering a WLTP-rated range of 456 km. The vehicle supports 170 kW DC fast charging, juicing from 10% to 80% in around 31 minutes. AC charging is rated at 11 kW (optional 22 kW). Combined WLTP energy consumption stands at 25.9–27.3 kWh/100 km.

Chassis and Handling

The SQ8 Sportback e-tron is built on an electrified adaptation of the MLB Evo platform. Suspension duties are handled by front and rear five-link independent setups, paired with standard adaptive air suspension that automatically modulates ride height (raising by up to 76 mm or lowering by up to 40 mm) and damping firmness based on vehicle speed, selected drive mode, and road conditions. The standard quattro electric all-wheel-drive system executes millisecond-quick torque distribution across the axles. Furthermore, the rear axle features electric torque vectoring (e-torque), which actively channels torque between the rear wheels mid-corner to sharpen agility and high-speed stability. Steering is an electromechanical power steering setup with progressive, variable-ratio feedback. Braking power comes from six-piston fixed front callipers clamping onto ventilated discs, with a carbon-ceramic braking system available as an option. Drivers can toggle between six drive modes: Auto, Comfort, Dynamic, Efficiency, Individual, and Offroad.

Cabin and Equipment

The SQ8 Sportback e-tron comes in a five-seater layout, featuring "S"-embossed front sports seats with multi-way electric adjustment, heating, and memory functions, with seat ventilation and massage functions available as options. The rear seats feature a 40:20:40 split-folding design. Boot capacity is rated at 528 litres, expanding to a cavernous 1,567 litres with the rear seats folded down.

On the creature comforts front, the vehicle is equipped with four-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic glass sunroof, keyless entry with push-start button, and a hands-free powered tailgate with kick sensor. The infotainment suite is powered by the MIB 3 (third-generation Modular Infotainment Matrix) platform, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, connected navigation, over-the-air (OTA) updates, and the Audi Voice Assistant. Premium audio is delivered by a standard 13-speaker Sonos sound system, with an optional 16-speaker, 730 W Bang & Olufsen 3D premium sound system.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The SQ8 Sportback e-tron comes comprehensively fitted with the Audi AI intelligent driver assistance suite, providing Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities. Key features include:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control (with stop-and-go functionality)

  • Lane Centring Assist and Lane Departure Warning

  • Traffic Sign Recognition

  • Autonomous Emergency Braking (with pedestrian and vehicle detection)

  • Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert

  • 360-Degree Surround View Camera and Park Assist

Additionally, the vehicle comes standard with Night Vision Assist, which identifies pedestrians and larger animals in low-light conditions to trigger driver warnings. For passive safety, the SQ8 Sportback e-tron features a high-rigidity hybrid body shell of aluminium and high-strength steel, supported by a full suite of airbags comprising dual front, front side, and full-length curtain airbags.

Market Performance and Reception

Serving as the flagship performance offering in Audi’s all-electric SUV portfolio, the Audi SQ8 Sportback e-tron shoulders the task of upholding the brand’s performance pedigree in the electric era. Following its 2023 rollout, the model garnered positive reviews from the European motoring media, drawing praise for its linear power delivery, tenacious quattro grip, and the refined ride quality of its adaptive air suspension. However, its 456 km WLTP range remains modest against class rivals, and delays to the PPE platform mean the MLB Evo architecture trails newer competitors in certain software and intelligent cockpit features. Some reviews also noted scope for finer calibration in its regenerative braking transition.

In the market, the SQ8 Sportback e-tron goes head-to-head with rivals such as the BMW iX M60 (619 hp, ~566 km range) and Tesla Model X Plaid (1,020 hp, ~536 km range). Audi has engineered a well-judged balance between high performance and daily refinement—whilst its 4.4-second sprint might not chase the extreme numbers of its peers, its all-round capability as an everyday performance SUV remains thoroughly convincing. Acting as a pivotal bridge in Audi's electrification transition, the SQ8 Sportback e-tron proves that the brand's performance DNA remains very much alive in the EV era.
