The BMW 1 Series is the entry-level premium hatchback from German marque BMW, as well as the brand's first compact model to feature a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. The model line was officially introduced in 2004 to plug the market gap left following the discontinuation of the 3 Series Compact. As of June 2026, the BMW 1 Series has entered its fourth generation (F70 generation), chalking up global cumulative sales exceeding 3 million units.

The BMW 1 Series is positioned as a premium compact hatchback, with core selling points centering on BMW's signature driving dynamics, refined cabin craftsmanship, and compact, agile proportions. The fourth-generation model (F70) made its global debut in 2025, sporting a fresh design language and modern tech features. In Taiwan, official distributor Pan German Motors introduced three variants: 120 Sport, 120 M Sport, and M135 xDrive, priced at RM1,550,000, RM1,830,000, and RM2,680,000 New Taiwan Dollars, respectively. In Japan, the 1 Series line-up expanded with a new entry-level variant, the "120 Original", tagged at RM4,800,000 Yen. Dimension-wise, the fourth-generation model measures 4,361 mm long, 1,800 mm wide, and 1,459 mm tall, riding on a 2,670 mm wheelbase.
The exterior styling of the fourth-generation BMW 1 Series adopts a Neue Klasse-inspired kidney grille for the first time, flanked by standard adaptive LED headlights sporting the brand's iconic four-eye light signature across the range. Up front, a forward-thrusting three-dimensional high-gloss black grille gives the front fascia a wider, more purposeful stance. Along the sides, compact and taut character lines rise from front to back, creating an athletic, ready-to-pounce silhouette complete with a sleek modern "1" model identifier on the flanks. The rear end is instantly recognisable, complemented by premium high-gloss painted finishes on the side skirts and rear diffuser. The flagship M135 xDrive is dressed with dedicated M Performance bits, featuring an M horizontal-slat kidney grille, M double-stalk wing mirrors, an M rear spoiler, 19-inch M multi-spoke alloy wheels, and 90 mm quad exhaust tailpipes.
Inside, the cockpit is strictly driver-focused, headlined by a redesigned dashboard and a floating curved display panel. High-gloss black trim on the centre console is paired with chrome-accented window switches, elevating the cabin with an above-segment premium touch. The 120 M Sport and M135 xDrive variants gain bespoke interior appointments, including an M tricolour-stitched dashboard, an M multifunction leather steering wheel, M illuminated Aluminium Hexacube interior trim, and an Anthracite headliner.
The fourth-generation BMW 1 Series is offered with multiple powertrain options. The 120 Sport and 120 M Sport are powered by a 1.5-litre inline-three turbocharged petrol engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system (with the electric motor delivering an additional 20 PS and 55 Nm of torque), while the petrol mill itself puts out a maximum of 156 PS and 240 Nm of torque. Power is transferred via a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. It completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 7.8 seconds, while returning a fuel economy figure of 16.8 km/L on the WLTC cycle.
The hot hatch variant, the M135 xDrive, packs an M TwinPower Turbo inline-four petrol engine that churns out 300 PS and 400 Nm of torque. It despatches the century sprint in just 4.9 seconds, onwards to a governed top speed of 250 km/h. Furthermore, selected markets also get powertrain choices such as the 118i (1.6L four-cylinder petrol, 136 PS), 118d (2.0L turbodiesel), 120i (1.6L four-cylinder petrol, 177 PS), and 125i M Sport (2.0L four-cylinder petrol, 218 PS).
The fourth-generation BMW 1 Series rides on a front-wheel-drive platform (having transitioned away from the rear-wheel-drive architecture of older generations). The chassis incorporates lightweight engineering with an optimised front axle setup, delivering sharp steering feedback and high-speed composure. Suspension duties are handled by a setup comprising front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent arrangement. The M135 xDrive variant comes equipped with the xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system and a reinforced bodyshell, pushing dynamic capabilities even further. The car boasts a tight turning radius of 5.9 metres.
In the tech department, the fourth-gen 1 Series runs on BMW Operating System 9, delivering an intuitive user interface alongside bespoke customisation. Standard across the range are a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch central infotainment touchscreen. The setup supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, BMW Satellite Navigation, Augmented Reality (AR) navigation, and BMW Digital Key Plus 2.0.
On the comfort front, standard kit across all variants includes powered front sports seats with driver’s side memory, a sports multifunction leather steering wheel, a reverse camera, and rear air-con vents. The M135 xDrive steps up with a panoramic glass roof, driver’s powered lumbar support, M stitched seatbelts, M front sports seats with illuminated badges, and a harman/kardon premium sound system. Boot space is rated between 300 to 380 litres, expanding to 1,135 to 1,200 litres with the 60:40 split-folding rear seats laid flat.
The BMW 1 Series delivers top-tier safety and driver assistance features for its class. The BMW Personal CoPilot suite comes standard across the board, bundling: Front Collision Warning with Brake Intervention and Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Rear Collision Warning, Reverse AEB, and Attentiveness Assistant. It is also fitted with BMW's innovative Reversing Assistant, which stores the vehicle’s steering movements for the last 50 metres travelled forward at speeds under 35 km/h, enabling it to reverse out of tight alleys automatically. Passive safety is anchored by 6 airbags as standard. The 2026 facelift further elevates active and passive protection with the addition of Active Cruise Control and BMW ConnectedDrive Remote Services.
Ever since its 2004 debut, the BMW 1 Series has commanded cumulative global sales of over 3 million units, largely credited to its nimble handling and dynamic driving feel. However, in mainland China, the locally-assembled 1 Series Sedan faced significant headwinds—shifting only 23 units in February 2025, with total 2025 sales scraping just 76 units. Market watchers point out that the shift to a front-wheel-drive architecture diluted the engaging driving reputation established during the rear-wheel-drive era, which, compounded by relentless competition from aggressive domestic New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in the same price bracket, led to its lackluster sales performance.
In Taiwan, the fourth-gen 1 Series hit showrooms in September 2025 with three trim options: 120 Sport, 120 M Sport, and M135 xDrive. In Japan, the line-up welcomed the entry-level "120 Original" in May 2026, tagged at RM4,800,000 Yen to lower the barrier to entry. Serving as the primary gateway into the BMW brand, the 1 Series shoulders the strategic task of drawing younger buyers into the fold worldwide. Backed by Neue Klasse design cues, BMW OS 9, and comprehensive 48V mild-hybrid tech, this fourth iteration reasserts its footing in the premium compact hatchback arena.
