2026-10-03 11:40:02

Model Overview

The BYD T3 is an all-electric compact panel van produced by BYD Auto, developed as a "last-mile" urban logistics solution aimed primarily at commercial clients such as logistics firms, postal couriers, and corporate fleets. Built on BYD's proven passenger car platform, the EV van was introduced to the Chinese market around 2016 and has since been retailed across both domestic and international markets through continuous lifecycle updates.

In the second half of 2025, BYD streamlined the T3 model line-up and introduced an updated variant equipped with its proprietary Blade Battery, with domestic pricing in China ranging between RM100,000 and RM150,000. In overseas markets, the T3 has been rolled out in countries and territories including Singapore, Thailand, Jordan, and Macau. In Singapore, the T3 is distributed by Mobility Services under ST Engineering, carrying a local indicative price of around SGD 49,800 (excluding COE) with an Open Market Value (OMV) of SGD 23,078. In Thailand, the 2026 T3 retails at approximately THB 999,000. In Jordan, the official list price stands at approximately USD 23,900 (around RM173,000).

Design Language

The exterior styling of the BYD T3 carries over BYD's signature passenger car design cues while incorporating practical adaptations tailored for commercial duty. The van features an upright, boxy profile with a closed-off front grille prominently sporting the "BYD" script emblem. Halogen headlamps come as standard, while selected export variants benefit from LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and full-LED headlights.

In terms of dimensions, the vehicle measures 4,460 mm long, 1,720 mm wide, and 1,875 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,725 mm. Kerb weight ranges from 1,620 kg to 1,995 kg depending on the specification, with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) between 2,420 kg and 2,780 kg. It offers a rated payload capacity of around 675 kg to 790 kg, alongside a cargo volume of 3.5 m³ to 3.8 m³.

As a dedicated panel van, the T3 provides dual sliding side doors (spec-dependent) and a rear cargo door configuration, available in either twin barn doors or a top-hinged tailgate. The rear side panels are fully blinded, and a solid partition with integrated safety wire mesh separates the cargo area from the cabin, providing crucial protection for the occupants.

Inside, the T3 was among the earliest commercial offerings to integrate passenger car interior standards into the van segment. The cabin is finished in a dual-tone grey scheme with silver trim accents; although utilising hard plastics, the refined finish delivers better perceived quality than contemporary class rivals. Drivers get a three-spoke multi-function steering wheel paired with an instrument cluster featuring an integrated LCD screen that displays vehicle speed, motor power output, energy flow, and remaining range. The centre console is highlighted by satin-chrome-effect trim housing the integrated climate and audio controls, creating a neat and well-structured dashboard layout.

Powertrain & Performance

The BYD T3's electric drivetrain has seen significant evolution across two main technical phases:

Early models were powered by an EV powertrain utilising a nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) ternary lithium battery pack, coupled with an electric motor rated at a peak output of 160 kW (early homologation figure) and 310 Nm of torque.

Facelift and export variants (2024–2026 models) transitioned to BYD's in-house lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade Battery, typically featuring a 44.9 kWh capacity with a 220 V system voltage. Drive comes from a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) generating a maximum output of 100 kW (approx. 134–136 hp) and 180 Nm of peak torque. Energy storage options vary: following the switch to the Blade Battery, export models generally carry the 44.9 kWh pack—with the 2026 Thailand-spec model rated at 233 km under the WLTC test cycle; meanwhile, selected export variants retaining the 50.3 kWh NCM battery pack achieve a CLTC-rated range of up to 360 km.

Power is channelled through a single-speed reduction gear transmission, operated via a simple shift selector with R, N, and D positions. The T3 adopts a front-motor, front-wheel-drive (FWD) layout, achieving a top speed between 100 km/h and 130 km/h. The 0–100 km/h sprint is completed in over 10 seconds, while loaded gradeability ranges from 20% to 38%.

Range & Charging

The driving range of the BYD T3 varies according to the battery chemistry and testing cycle:

Battery Type Battery Capacity Test Cycle Driving Range
Lithium Iron Phosphate (Blade Battery) 44.9 kWh CLTC 220–335 km
Ternary Lithium Battery (NCM) 50.3 kWh CLTC 360 km
Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) 42.9 kWh Constant-Speed NEDC 250 km

For charging, the T3 supports both AC charging and DC fast charging, utilising industry-standard Type 2 and CCS2 charging ports. AC charging accepts a maximum input of 6.6 kW via a 230V single-phase or 400V three-phase power supply, taking roughly 7 to 13 hours for a full charge. On DC fast charging, the van supports 40 kW to 50 kW inputs, enabling a 30% to 80% state of charge (SoC) in approximately 30 to 40 minutes. The vehicle comes equipped as standard with a regenerative braking system and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) reverse power supply functionality.

Chassis & Handling

Underneath, the T3 uses a monocoque chassis structure, featuring independent MacPherson struts at the front and a heavy-duty leaf-spring non-independent setup at the rear—a tried-and-tested configuration built to withstand heavy cargo loads. Steering assist is handled by an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system on select variants, while others utilise a hydraulic power steering unit. Braking is handled by solid disc brakes on all four corners, supported by ABS as standard. An Electric Parking Brake (EPB) handles parking brake duties. The turning circle radius measures 5.75 metres. Rolling stock consists of 195/60 R16C commercial-grade reinforced tyres fitted on both axles.

Cabin & Convenience Features

Despite its commercial van underpinnings, the T3 benefits from BYD's extensive passenger car engineering in terms of interior appointments. On the tech front, it features an LCD driver info display and a central touchscreen infotainment unit (spec-dependent), equipped with Bluetooth, USB smartphone connectivity, and multimedia playback. A reverse camera is fitted as standard on higher trims. Creature comforts include standard automatic climate control (rather than a basic manual system), alongside supportive semi-leather/fabric combination seats. Both driver and front passenger seats feature adjustable armrests to reduce fatigue on long delivery routes. Other convenience kit includes keyless entry, push-start ignition, power windows, manual-adjust side mirrors, and a 4-to-5 speaker audio system. Drivers can toggle between Sport and Eco drive modes via a rotary controller located on the centre console.

Safety & Driver Assistance

In terms of safety, the BYD T3 is constructed around a high-tensile body shell, with selected variants offering dual front (driver and passenger) airbags (early base trims featured a driver airbag only). Active safety equipment includes an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), as well as an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) that emits an audible pedestrian warning sound when operating at low speeds in full EV mode. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) such as Level 2 semi-autonomous driving are not fitted, with the equipment list focusing on baseline safety compliance.

Market Performance & Reception

Since its debut in 2016, backed by BYD's strong brand reputation in battery tech and EV manufacturing, the T3 has carved out a solid footing in the domestic electric van segment, initially serving major state enterprises including China Post. In international markets, the T3 has gained steady traction in countries such as Singapore and Jordan as a cost-effective, zero-emission commercial workhorse. Singaporean distributors marketed the model as the “Most cost-saving full electric commercial van for your business need” , while BYD Jordan's official portal highlights it as “the smart, sustainable solution for modern business logistics” .

While its outright powertrain performance and driver-assist tech naturally lag behind modern passenger EVs, the T3 remains a formidable contender in the urban last-mile delivery sector. Its strong market appeal is underpinned by reliable Blade Battery technology, an expansive cargo hold of over 3.5 m³, exceptionally low running costs with energy consumption averaging just 12–15 kWh/100 km, and compelling green fleet advantages over traditional diesel vans. Alongside models like the e6, the T3 and its derivatives have secured an important share of BYD's commercial EV export portfolio across the Asia-Pacific region, providing valuable operational data for the brand's broader global fleet electrification push.
