Model Overview

The Chery Arrizo 7e is the maiden plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sedan introduced by Chery Automobile Co., Ltd., officially launched on 26 July 2016. Developed based on the Arrizo 7 C-segment sedan, the vehicle represented a strategic offering for Chery's new energy vehicle (NEV) expansion during its "Strategy 2.0" era, marking its first tangible step in transitioning from internal combustion engine (ICE) models to electrification.

The new car was offered in three variants: e-Zhishang, e-Zhixiang, and e-Zhizun, carrying an official recommended retail price ranging from RM179,900 to RM212,900. Factoring in combined national and local government subsidies of up to RM65,000, on-the-road prices dropped to between RM114,900 and RM147,900. In quota-controlled metropolitan areas such as Shanghai and Shenzhen, buyers also benefited from complimentary vehicle registration quotas and full purchase tax exemptions, significantly sharpening its edge in policy-driven markets.

Design Language

The Arrizo 7e shares a largely uniform exterior design with the facelifted Arrizo 7, sculpted around the "Life in Motion" design philosophy to deliver a youthful, dynamic aesthetic. Up front, it features an X-shaped layout with a chrome-embellished radiator grille that blends into the front bumper, flanked by smoked headlamp clusters with circular position lights for enhanced visual signature. At the rear, signature twin-strip LED tail lamps deliver a clean illumination profile. Visually distinguishing it from the standard petrol model are the charging port integrated into the left rear quarter panel, alongside bespoke "i-POWER" and "Arrizo 7e" badges on the boot lid. LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels are standard across the range, with a power sunroof offered as an option on higher-spec variants.

Inside, the Arrizo 7e features a symmetrical dashboard layout accented by piano black gloss trim and contrasting red stitching for an elevated cabin ambience. The twin-binnacle instrument cluster houses a 3.5-inch multi-info display (MID), complemented by piano black finishes around the centre air vents and a newly added coolant temperature display. In terms of cabin appointments, the upper dashboard is trimmed in extensive soft-touch slush-moulded plastics, with key contact surfaces wrapped in leather, placing its build quality among the upper tier of domestic Chinese brand offerings in its class. Measuring 4,652 mm long, 1,825 mm wide, and 1,483 mm tall with a 2,700 mm wheelbase, the cabin offers generous rear passenger legroom. However, boot capacity drops from 455 litres in the standard petrol model to 278 litres to accommodate the ternary lithium-ion battery pack behind the rear backrests.

Powertrain and Performance

The Arrizo 7e is powered by an ESS hybrid setup, making it the first Chinese-branded vehicle to adopt a P2 single-motor parallel hybrid architecture. The system pairs a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with a high-efficiency electric motor producing a maximum output of 55 kW (generating from 25 kW) at 6,200 rpm, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The 1.6L petrol unit alone delivers 93 kW and 160 Nm of peak torque. In terms of overall output, it completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 10.9 seconds before reaching a top speed of 180 km/h. Energy is supplied by a 9.2 kWh ternary lithium-ion battery pack, backed by an 8-year or 120,000 km warranty. The battery management system incorporates an intelligent thermal regulation operating range spanning -35°C to 55°C, validated through rigorous bench and on-road endurance tests to ensure operational stability under extreme conditions, rated for up to 3,000 charge-discharge cycles.

For electric range and efficiency, the Arrizo 7e achieves an NEDC-rated pure electric range of 50 km and an overall cruising range of up to 930 km, with real-world tested combined fuel consumption rated at 1.9 L/100 km. In hybrid mode with a depleted battery, fuel consumption stands at approximately 4.0 L/100 km, consistently undercutting equivalent petrol-powered rivals.

Chassis and Handling

The Arrizo 7e utilises a front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FWD) layout underpinned by a monocoque chassis. In terms of running gear, the entire range comes standard with front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent suspension, offering standout hardware specifications within its class. Steering is handled by an electric power steering (EPS) setup that provides a light steering weight and a tight turning circle. Braking hardware consists of ventilated front discs and solid rear discs, paired with a conventional mechanical handbrake. It rides on 205/55 R16 tyres. Thanks to the rear multi-link independent setup, the vehicle demonstrates commendable bump compliance over broken road surfaces, composed high-speed cruising stability, and superior body control through corners compared to segment competitors using a rear torsion beam.

Cabin and Features

The Arrizo 7e comes standard with a 7-inch central infotainment touchscreen powered by Chery's Cloudrive 2.0 telematics system, integrating Bluetooth connectivity, smartphone mirroring, and GPS navigation for everyday connectivity needs. Over the standard petrol model, the hybrid variant adds keyless entry, push-start ignition, and automatic air conditioning as standard across the range for enhanced convenience. Through a dedicated smartphone app, owners can access remote telematics functions such as vehicle status monitoring, door lock control, battery charge alerts, and scheduled charging—cutting-edge features among electrified models of its era. Higher-spec Zhixiang and Zhizun variants gain voice command capabilities, with the flagship Zhizun adding premium touches like a full digital instrument cluster, power-adjustable driver's seat with memory, and a built-in coolbox. An acoustic-tuned multi-speaker audio system comes standard across the line, ensuring a balanced in-car audio performance.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The Arrizo 7e delivers a well-rounded safety package. In passive safety, the body structure incorporates high-strength thermoformed steel and a reinforced safety cell design engineered to absorb and dissipate impact energy effectively. Front dual airbags are standard across the board, with front side airbags fitted to upper trim levels. On the active safety front, all variants come standard with an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control (TC), a Bosch Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) for comprehensive protection. Driver assistance features include standard rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, and cruise control across all trims. It is also fitted with one-touch up/down power windows with anti-pinch on all four doors, alongside remote window closing via the key fob.

Market Performance and Reception

As Chery's pioneering plug-in hybrid saloon, the Arrizo 7e generated significant initial market traction, driven by its exceptional fuel economy and eligibility for free vehicle registration incentives, achieving steady sales particularly in quota-restricted cities. However, its lifecycle was comparatively brief; with no subsequent facelift or next-generation model released, it gradually exited the market around 2018. Consequently, total units on the road remain relatively low, cementing its position as a transitional stepping stone in Chery's electrification journey.

Customer feedback highlighted several strengths: solid body construction, high passive safety levels, a planted chassis with good high-speed road manners, and standard active safety kit including ESP and TPMS. Conversely, consumer complaint portals logged recurring issues such as "engine stalling on the move", "high-voltage system faults preventing vehicle start-up", and "air conditioning compressor failures", reflecting the growing pains of Chery's first-generation hybrid architecture. Furthermore, the heavily compromised boot space due to battery packaging and an unrefined hybrid operating logic drew criticism from owners, detracting from everyday practicality. In the market, it competed head-to-head with the BYD Qin (2015 model priced around RM209,800) and Roewe e550 (2016 model priced around RM239,800), holding competitive advantages in pricing and fuel efficiency, though Chery trailed behind major rivals in electrified brand equity and powertrain maturity. Overall, the Arrizo 7e served as the genesis of Chery's electrification strategy, yielding vital R&D insights and real-world validation data that laid the foundation for its subsequent new energy technologies.
