2026-09-21 10:00:17

Model Overview

The E5 PHEV is positioned as a mid-size plug-in hybrid SUV built around the core product philosophy of "ultra-economical running, long driving range, and generous cabin space", targeted primarily at larger families and practical buyers looking for low running costs. The model marks a strategic milestone in DFSK's transition from traditional commercial vehicles into new energy passenger cars. In its domestic market of China, the Landian E5 carries a recommended retail price range of RM99,800 to RM121,900, with the standard variant starting at just RM99,800—making it one of the very few plug-in hybrid mid-size SUVs available in this price bracket.

In terms of exterior dimensions, the E5 PHEV measures 4,760 mm in length, 1,865 mm in width, and 1,710 mm in height, with a 2,785 mm wheelbase, placing it squarely in the A+/mid-size SUV segment. The vehicle is offered in two seating configurations: a five-door seven-seater (2+3+2) and a five-seater. The five-seater variant delivers a standard boot capacity of 465 litres, expanding to 1,432 litres with the second row folded flat, and up to 2,000 litres with the rear rows stowed.Minimum ground clearance is rated at 180 mm, with a fuel tank capacity of 58 litres and a kerb weight of 1,895 kg.

Design Language

The E5 PHEV adopts a fresh design language defined by a clean and commanding presence. The front fascia is dominated by a large starry dot-matrix digital grille featuring chrome parametric elements, crowned by a full-width "skyline" LED daytime running light strip connecting both headlamp clusters. Subtle blue accents inside the lighting housings underscore its electrified credentials. The SUV also sports the brand's new emblem—a stylised letter "E" formed by nine dots—while the illuminated treatment above the grille lends an extra touch of modernity and road presence.

Down the flanks, crisp character lines stretch from the front headlamps through to the rear, creating a purposeful, forward-leaning stance. Sculpted door panels enhance the SUV’s three-dimensional profile. The variant shown here is equipped with rear privacy glass and acoustic double-glazed front windows. At the rear, the wide-based stance is complemented by full-width LED taillights that mirror the front lighting signature, along with a concealed exhaust layout for a clean, understated aesthetic.

The cabin is finished in an inviting two-tone colour scheme with dark upper and light lower trims. Soft-touch materials and chrome accents adorn the dashboard, complemented by wood-grain trim to create a welcoming ambience.A dual-spoke flat-bottom multi-function steering wheel sits ahead of an integrated dual-screen setup comprising a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch floating touchscreen infotainment display. The plushly padded seats offer generous support; the front seats can recline up to 165°, while the second and third rows fold completely flat to provide a highly versatile cargo area.

Powertrain and Performance

Underpinned by the Seres Group DE-i intelligent electric drive platform, the E5 PHEV is powered by a 1.5-litre plug-in hybrid system supplied by BYD’s FinDreams Powertrain. The internal combustion engine is a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol unit delivering a maximum power of 81 kW (rated net output of 75 kW) and 110 PS. Operating on an ultra-high 15.5:1 compression ratio, it achieves a peak thermal efficiency of 43.04%.

Electric drive is provided by a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor rated at 130 kW, bringing total system output to approximately 180 hp. The official 0-100 km/h sprint is completed in 7.4 seconds, while 0-50 km/h acceleration takes just 2.9 seconds.

Power is delivered via an electronic continuously variable transmission (E-CVT), with a top speed of 165 km/h and a WLTC combined fuel consumption figure of 7.3 L/100 km.

Energy is stored in a ternary lithium battery pack with a capacity of 17.52 kWh (rated at 19.4 kWh in certain specifications). This delivers a pure electric driving range of 87 km on the WLTC cycle, an electricity consumption of 15.3 kWh/100 km, and a depleted-battery fuel consumption of 5.5 L/100 km. Combined total cruising range on a full tank and full charge reaches up to 1,150 km.On the charging front, standard AC charging requires approximately 4 hours for a full recharge. In addition, the entire range comes standard with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) reverse power supply, allowing the vehicle to power external electrical appliances for outdoor camping and other activities.

Chassis and Handling

Under the skin, the E5 PHEV rides on an all-round independent suspension setup featuring front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link suspension, which is a commendable hardware specification for an SUV in this price segment.Higher-spec variants benefit from Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) shock absorber technology, which automatically adjusts damping forces according to road conditions to enhance ride comfort over rough surfaces and gravel.

The drivetrain layout is front-engine, front-wheel drive (FWD), paired with an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system. Braking is handled by four-wheel disc brakes with ventilated front discs and solid rear discs, complemented by an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB).Wheel and tyre options are available in two sizes: 225/55 R18 and 235/50 R19.

The chassis tuning is distinctly comfort-oriented, with a supple suspension setup that filters out road imperfections well during urban commutes. However, user feedback notes that the softer setup can introduce noticeable body float and rebound over larger potholes or speed bumps, which may cause slight motion discomfort for rear passengers.

Cabin and Equipment

The E5 PHEV is among the first batch of production models to deeply integrate HUAWEI HiCar 3.0. The infotainment system enables seamless smartphone pairing for features like uninterrupted navigation handoff and video calls, alongside online music streaming, voice command, and a 360-degree camera display.

In terms of convenience and comfort, the SUV comes standard with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather upholstery, an electric sunroof, and mobile app remote vehicle control. The driver’s seat features six-way power adjustment, ventilation, and heating functions.Audio is delivered through a 12-speaker high-fidelity sound system, complemented by an intelligent cabin air purification system (PM2.5 sensor + negative ion generator) to maintain healthy cabin air quality.Practical items such as a powered tailgate, automatic headlamps, and rain-sensing wipers are standard across the range.

Safety and Driver Assistance

In terms of passive safety, the E5 PHEV uses a high-strength safety cage body structure, fitted with dual front airbags as standard, while higher-spec variants add front side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags.

Active safety is one of the key differentiators for the E5 PHEV. Standard across the range are systems such as Lane Change Assist, Door Open Warning, Rear Collision Warning, Blind Spot Detection, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Higher-spec grades add Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), including Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) / Active Safety System, and Driver Fatigue Monitoring.

On the sensor front, selected variants integrate 13 high-precision sensors (including 2 millimetre-wave radars, 6 ultrasonic sensors, and 5 HD cameras). The combination of a 360-degree panoramic camera and a transparent chassis view gives the driver clear visibility of the road underneath, significantly enhancing safety when negotiating narrow passages, bends, or undulating terrain.

Market Performance and Reception

In the Chinese domestic market, the Landian E5 has secured a solid foothold in the plug-in hybrid SUV segment courtesy of its aggressive "from RM99,800" value-for-money strategy. In April 2026, monthly sales reached 2,311 units, bringing cumulative deliveries from January to April 2026 to 7,181 units.Globally, as of the end of 2025, the E5 series captured a 3.9% market share in Ecuador's hybrid vehicle market, ranking seventh in the segment.

In overseas markets, the DFSK E5 has been exported to numerous countries across Europe, Russia, Chile, Ecuador, and Belarus. In Italy, the single-variant E5 PHEV is priced from €36,888, featuring standard kit such as a panoramic glass roof, 19-inch alloy wheels, leather seats, a touchscreen infotainment head unit, and core ADAS functions. In Chile, the E5 was officially launched in Santiago in August 2024.DFSK has also confirmed plans to introduce the E5 model in Belarus.

In terms of owner sentiment, the E5 PHEV has earned widespread praise for its practicality (flexible seven-seater packaging and large boot volume), value proposition (the most extensively equipped PHEV SUV in its class), and fuel economy (1,150 km combined range and 5.5 L/100 km depleted-battery consumption). Main criticisms focus on the soft suspension lacking roll support during high-speed cornering, relatively modest low-speed EV range, and limited after-sales service network coverage in certain export regions.

From a brand perspective, the DFSK E5 PHEV represents a pivotal model marking the marque's transition from a commercial vehicle specialist to a credible player in the new energy passenger car arena. By bundling well-regarded components including the BYD FinDreams hybrid system, Huawei HiCar intelligent cockpit, and range-wide L2 active safety features at a highly competitive price point, it has successfully lowered the barrier to entry for mid-size PHEV SUVs below RM100,000, serving as an important market benchmark for the mass-market adoption of Chinese plug-in hybrids.
