Geely Emgrand GT PHEV

2026-10-01 12:00:23

When it comes to the "Geely Emgrand GT PHEV", the story is rather unique. It is not an actual production nameplate that hit the market, but rather the intersection of two defining eras in Geely's history: one pointing to an ambitious GT sports car blueprint, and the other representing a pragmatic mass-production endeavour.

🐯 Concept Prototype: Emgrand GT / "Geely Tiger" (2008–2010)

The roots of the "Emgrand GT" trace back to Geely's concept sports car known as the "Geely Tiger". The vehicle boasted an extremely bold design inspired by the Chinese "tiger", featuring a front grille shaped like a tiger's nose alongside sharp, aggressive character lines. Even more striking was its scissor door setup, a feature that was exceptionally rare among Chinese carmakers at the time.

As early as 2008, the GT was showcased in concept form. Under original plans, it was envisioned as a bona fide four-seater supercar. On the powertrain front, it was slated to feature 2.4L, 2.0T, and even 3.5L V6 engines, reflecting both immense ambition and a highly forward-looking design language.

However, this GT never made it to assembly lines. Its true significance lies in serving as a technological halo for the Emgrand brand—its bold "tiger" styling and pursuit of high-performance "GT" credentials profoundly shaped the engineering ethos of subsequent models from Emgrand and Geely.

🔌 Mass Production Exploration: Emgrand PHEV (2017)

As aspirations for a dedicated GT sports car faded, Geely channelled another facet of the "Emgrand GT" vision into a far more pragmatic model—the Emgrand PHEV. This was the tangible road-going product that ultimately reached showroom floors.

  • Launch and Positioning: Officially launched in November 2017, it debuted as Geely's first plug-in hybrid sedan under its new energy vehicle push. Post-subsidy pricing ranged from RM129,800 to RM149,800.

  • Key Specs and Market Reception: Propulsion came from a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with dual electric motors, delivering an NEDC pure electric range of 61 km. However, sales performance remained modest. Subsequently, the mantle was handed over to a new plug-in hybrid model called the Emgrand L Hi·P, which was also marketed under the "Emgrand GT" moniker at one point.

💡 Summary

Within the Geely lineage, the "Geely Emgrand GT PHEV" moniker feels very much like a relay race: it kicked off as an ambitious sports car dream complete with scissor doors, and eventually culminated in a mainstream family sedan that brought together the dynamic spirit of a "GT" and the efficiency of a "PHEV".
