Infiniti

2026-07-26 07:10:02

Infiniti is a luxury car brand under Nissan Motor Company, established in North America in 1989, with brand headquarters located in Yokohama, Japan. Known for its distinctive avant-garde design, excellent product performance, and the service philosophy of "Customer Experience First," it holds an important position in the global luxury car market. Infiniti officially entered the Chinese market in 2007, and localisation began in Xiangyang, Hubei, in 2014. In 2022, Dongfeng Infiniti was incorporated into the Dongfeng Nissan management system, maintaining operations in China by integrating group resources.

Development History

In 1985, Nissan Motor Company established the "Horizon Working Group" to secretly launch its first luxury brand project. In 1987, Nissan selected "Infiniti" as the brand name. Its logo, designed with two roads extending forward as its core, symbolises the belief in constant breakthroughs and reaching for the distance. On 8 November 1989, Infiniti was officially launched in North America, debuting the Q45 flagship sedan and M30 two-door coupé on the same day, and establishing 51 dealerships, thus beginning the North American journey of Japanese luxury brands alongside Lexus and Acura, which also entered the North American market that year.

Infiniti's early development focused on the North American market, quickly gaining traction with its unique design language and specialised customer service system. In the 1990s, Infiniti successively launched multiple models, including the G20 and J30, gradually enriching its product matrix. The VQ series engine, launched in 1995, became a technical milestone in the brand's history—the engine continuously won the "Ward's 10 Best Engines" award for 14 consecutive years, thanks to its excellent power smoothness and fuel economy. In 2003, Infiniti became the fastest-growing luxury car brand in the United States.

The Chinese market is an important battleground for Infiniti's internationalisation. In 2007, Infiniti officially entered the Chinese market through imports. In 2014, Dongfeng Infiniti was established, and the Xiangyang factory began localised production, successively launching two localised models, the Q50L and QX50. In 2016, the brand proposed the new proposition "EMPOWER THE DRIVE—Unleash Potential." In 2021, the QX60 was exposed by the CCTV 315 Gala due to transmission issues, causing a negative impact on the brand's image. On 5 January 2022, Dongfeng Infiniti was incorporated into the Dongfeng Nissan management system, operating as a business headquarters, with the aim of optimising cost structure and retaining the brand's presence in the Chinese market.

Product Lineup

As of 2026, Infiniti's core product sequences are concentrated in the luxury SUV field, all using the "QX+Number" naming system.

The full-size flagship SUV QX80 is the brand's flagship model, long shouldering the responsibility of demonstrating the brand's stature. The vehicle has a large footprint, distinctive exterior design, and strong power performance, maintaining a stable high-end user base. The modern flagship SUV QX60 is positioned as a three-row large luxury SUV, equipped with a 2.0-litre VC-Turbo variable compression ratio four-cylinder engine, with maximum power of 252 horsepower, mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission, balancing family travel functionality with luxury quality. In the full year of 2025, the QX60 model contributed the majority of the brand's sales in China.

The mid-size luxury SUV QX50 is the main localised model for Infiniti in China. The 2026 model completed its annual update in July 2025, launching three variants in total, with an official guide price ranging from 350,800 to 391,800 RMB. The new car is equipped with a 2.0T VC-Turbo variable compression ratio engine as standard, with maximum power of 180kW and maximum torque of 380N·m, mated to a CVT continuously variable transmission (simulating 8 gears).

Positioned as a mid-size luxury coupé SUV, the QX65 is the newest member of the Infiniti product line-up. The model made its global premiere on 26 March 2026, regarded by the brand as a spiritual successor to the classic FX series, aiming to fill the product gap left after the QX70 was discontinued. Equipped with a 2.0-litre VC-Turbo engine, with maximum power of 272 horsepower, mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission, and offered in both front-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive versions, it officially went on sale in the US market in the summer of 2026.

In the sedan field, Infiniti has essentially reduced its sedan product line. Classic sedan models such as the Q50 and Q70 have gradually been discontinued in multiple major markets worldwide. The sports coupé Q60 is also at the end of its product lifecycle.

Market Performance

Infiniti's performance in the global market shows a significant north-south differentiation pattern—North America is its traditional core market and the pillar of the brand's sales, while in the Chinese market, the brand is experiencing a profound survival crisis.

In the North American home market, Infiniti shows signs of recovery after years of decline. Full-year 2025 sales decreased by approximately 9% compared to the previous year, shrinking by 65.6% compared to the peak period. With only two or three models on sale at dealerships, the situation remains quite fragile. However, entering the first quarter of 2026, Infiniti's retail sales increased significantly year-on-year, rated by the Nissan Group internally as the "fastest-growing brand in the US market." This recovery trend is attributable to the boost from new products such as the QX65 and the preliminary results of dealer network adjustments.

In the Chinese market, Infiniti's situation is exactly the opposite. In 2025, Dongfeng Infiniti's sales in China were only approximately 1,550 vehicles, averaging fewer than 130 vehicles per month. This figure is only a fraction of the monthly sales of a top-selling model from a leading brand. Entering 2026, the downturn intensified further: January sales were only 92 vehicles, February dropped to 40 vehicles, March was 101 vehicles, and the cumulative total for the first quarter was 237 vehicles, down approximately 30% year-on-year. The national dealer network has shrunk significantly, with industry statistics showing only about 58 stores remaining, and some existing showrooms are networked with Dongfeng Nissan for sales. Under the strong encirclement of domestic new energy brands, Japanese luxury brands such as Infiniti and Acura, along with Lincoln and Jaguar Land Rover, belong to the "second-tier luxury camp" and are generally viewed by the industry as the first round of candidates likely to fully exit the Chinese market in 2026 to 2027.

Core Technologies

Infiniti's core technology assets are concentrated in the powertrain field, with the VC-Turbo Variable Compression Ratio Engine being the most renowned—this is also the brand's most important technical hallmark. This engine can intelligently switch the compression ratio between 14:1 and 8:1—high compression ratio improves fuel economy, while low compression ratio releases strong power, achieving the unity of contradiction between traditional internal combustion engine power and fuel consumption. Subsequent iterations of the VC-Turbo have expanded to 2.0T versions, fitted to main models such as the QX50 (272 horsepower), QX60 (252 horsepower), QX65 (272 horsepower), and Q60. The 9-speed automatic transmission has become standard across the range.

Beyond traditional technology, Infiniti's intelligent technology deployment is noticeably lagging behind the industry pace. Although there is some accumulation in active safety—having pioneered intelligent cruise control systems (ICC), lane departure warning (LDW), and other forward-looking functions—in terms of high-order intelligent driving assistance functions, the brand has only remained at the ProPILOT Assist Level 2 assisted driving stage, with obvious gaps compared to Level 2+ and even Level 3 competitors.

In the field of hybrid and pure electric powertrains, Infiniti's progress is also far behind competitors. Although the brand launched a small number of hybrid models in the 2010s, it never managed to achieve scaled application.

Global Footprint

The North American market is Infiniti's foundation. Since the brand was born in North America in 1989, the US market has always been its largest single market globally. In order to return the brand to a growth trajectory, the Nissan Group has taken a series of aggressive measures in North America—providing brand transition subsidies to dealers and accelerating the new product introduction rhythm, with the aim of stabilising a persistently challenging market situation.

The Chinese market has experienced a strategic retreat from joint venture to contraction, from localisation to reconstruction. The annual sales volume of 1,550 vehicles in 2025 made it impossible to support an independent localised production and sales system. The historical trajectory is highly similar to the early performance of Acura (which exited the Chinese market in 2022). Industry expectations are that Infiniti's operations in China may transition to a pure import model within the next year, and the brand may retain "regional presence" rather than "deep engagement."

Future Outlook

In terms of electrification and intelligent transformation, Infiniti's pace is noticeably lagging behind the overall tempo of the luxury car market. The brand originally planned to launch four new models by the end of 2027, including two pure electric vehicles—respectively a mid-to-large sedan and a crossover SUV. However, the aforementioned pure electric plan has been largely shelved. Instead, Infiniti shifted its product update focus to hybrid and V6 fuel power in 2026—according to the latest plan announced by the Nissan Group, a new mid-size hybrid SUV, a V6 sedan focused on performance, and two large hybrid SUVs will be launched, and new models based on a new body-on-frame platform will be added in the North American market.

Most worthy of attention is the Q50 revitalisation plan. According to the plan presented at Infiniti's US dealer conference, the brand will build the second-generation internal combustion engine version of the Q50 on the Nissan Skyline sedan platform, to be launched in the second half of 2027. The new car will offer rear-wheel-drive layout, and will even include manual transmission versions and high-performance 450-horsepower V6 power options. "Anti-electrification"—responding to market doubts with high-performance fuel vehicles in the 2026–2027 time window—has become Infiniti's relatively pragmatic and highly controversial revitalisation path.

The Nissan Group has listed Infiniti as a core pillar of its long-term growth strategy. President and CEO Ivan Espinoza has clearly stated that the brand needs to keep at least five models on sale to achieve a stable market size. In the future, Infiniti will evolve towards a refined, performance-oriented product matrix, gradually building a clearer and sharper differentiation between Infiniti and the main Nissan brand.
