2026-09-21 11:40:03

Model Overview

The JAECOO 7 SHS is the first plug-in hybrid mid-size SUV from Chery's premium marque, JAECOO. Marketed globally as the JAECOO J7 SHS, its domestic counterpart in China is the Chery Tansuo 06 (J6) Pro PHEV. Established in 2023 through a joint venture between Chery and Jaguar Land Rover, JAECOO is tailored specifically for mid-to-high-end overseas markets. In April 2024, the JAECOO 7 SHS made its global debut at the Shanghai Auto Show and subsequently launched in Italy at an introductory price of EUR 34,900, marking the brand's official entry into Europe. By 2025, the model had rolled out across more than 30 international markets, including Italy, Thailand, South Africa, the UAE, Australia, and the UK.

Measuring 4,500 mm in length, 1,865 mm in width, and 1,650 mm in height, with a 2,620 mm wheelbase, the five-seater sits in the compact PHEV SUV segment. It takes the fight directly to mainstream segment stalwarts such as the Toyota RAV4, Kia Sportage, and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

Design Language

Penned by Chery’s European Design Centre, the exterior of the JAECOO 7 SHS commands attention with its muscular and upright silhouette, bearing an uncanny resemblance to the Range Rover Evoque. Up front, it features a signature bold waterfall-style chrome grille with vertical slats, flanked by slim LED daytime running lights and a prominent brand emblem along the bonnet edge, giving it an imposing fascia. Along the sides, a sleek, upright profile is complemented by flush pop-out door handles and large dual-tone alloy wheels housing red brake calipers to accentuate its sporty credentials. At the rear, full-width LED tail lights pair with a chunky, scuff-resistant bumper and integrated faux exhaust trims to deliver a planted, rugged stance.

Inside, the cabin embraces a minimalist aesthetic anchored by a large 14.8-inch portrait touchscreen that consolidates most vehicle functions, leaving only essential physical controls. The dashboard features strong horizontal lines and a multi-tiered layout, wrapped in generous soft-touch materials, chrome accents, and leather upholstery to create an upscale, premium ambiance. A steering column-mounted gear selector substantially frees up usable space on the centre console.

Powertrain and Performance

The JAECOO 7 SHS is powered by a super hybrid system that pairs a fifth-generation 1.5-litre turbocharged GDI hybrid-specific engine with an electric drive motor. The dedicated petrol mill produces 105 kW and 215 Nm of torque, boasting a thermal efficiency of 44.5%. The electric motor delivers a peak output of 150 kW and 310 Nm. Mated to a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), the system operates seamlessly across pure electric, series, parallel, and regenerative braking modes. Total system output stands at 255 kW and 525 Nm of torque, delivering a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 180 km/h.

Energy is stored in an 18.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. Under the WLTP cycle, it achieves an all-electric range of 90 km, comfortably catering to daily urban commutes. With a full tank and full charge, the combined driving range exceeds 1,200 km, with extreme real-world testing logging over 1,488 km. WLTP fuel consumption is rated below 6.0 L/100 km. In terms of charging, 40 kW DC fast charging juices the battery from 30% to 80% in just 20 minutes, while a regular AC charge takes around 160 minutes. Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) reverse power capability comes standard across the range, catering to outdoor and camping needs.

Chassis and Handling

The JAECOO 7 SHS adopts a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout underpinned by front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent suspension. This sophisticated setup delivers a stable, composed ride with commendable bump absorption. An Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Hold and four-wheel disc brakes come standard, riding on 235/55 R18 tyres. Stopping performance is impressive, achieving a 100-0 km/h braking distance of just 36 metres. Drivers can select from three drive modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport, with energy management tailored for optimum efficiency in Eco mode.

Cabin and Equipment

The cockpit is headlined by a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.8-inch portrait touchscreen, paired with an 8-speaker Sony premium audio system. The infotainment suite supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, onboard navigation, and Bluetooth audio streaming. The top-spec variant adds an Augmented Reality Head-Up Display (AR-HUD). Comfort conveniences include standard dual-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic sunroof, a 50W wireless phone charger, ambient lighting, and a powered tailgate. Power-adjustable, heated, and ventilated front seats further enhance occupant comfort. Boot capacity starts at 500 litres and expands to 1,265 litres with the split-folding rear seats folded flat, supported by over 20 storage spaces throughout the interior.

Safety and Intelligent Driving

The JAECOO 7 SHS excels in safety, securing dual five-star crash ratings from both Euro NCAP and Australasian ANCAP in 2025. In Euro NCAP testing, it scored 81% for Adult Occupant Protection and 80% for Child Occupant Protection. The vehicle comes equipped with 21 advanced driver assistance features, including Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop & Go, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist detection, Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Centring Assist (LCA), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), and Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR). Passive safety is reinforced by a full complement of airbags and thermoformed ultra-high-strength steel in critical areas. Intelligent driving capability is rated at Level 2. A 540° HD panoramic camera system provides a transparent chassis view, helping drivers negotiate potholes and obstacles with ease.

Market Performance and Reception

The JAECOO 7 SHS has emerged as a global hit among Chinese hybrid models. In 2025, the JAECOO 7 bagged the "Best Family Car" accolade at the Scottish Car of the Year Awards. In the UK, monthly sales hit 10,064 units in March 2026—capturing a 2.66% market share to become Britain's best-selling new car for the month—with the SHS plug-in hybrid variant making up 85% of total volume. From January to April 2026, cumulative UK registrations reached 15,703 units, crowning it the country's top-selling new car year-to-date. In April 2026, global monthly sales of the JAECOO 7 reached 17,963 units, pushing OMODA & JAECOO's combined global monthly sales close to the 70,000-unit mark, an impressive 150% surge year-on-year. Cumulative global sales have surpassed 1,000,000 units, setting a record as the fastest vehicle brand to achieve the million-unit milestone. Starting prices stand at AED 99,900 in the UAE, ZAR 689,900 in South Africa, and AUD 47,990 in Australia.

With its head-turning Range Rover-esque styling, commodious interior, outstanding fuel economy, generous standard equipment, 1,200 km combined range, and dual five-star safety credentials, the JAECOO 7 SHS stands out as a strong value proposition in the RM100,000 to RM200,000 global hybrid SUV segment. Minor shortcomings include overly sensitive ADAS alerts at low speeds, some cabin plastic trims that could feel more tactile, and a slightly shallow boot height. Overall, buoyed by its SHS super hybrid powertrain, robust safety build, and long-distance capability, the JAECOO 7 SHS has firmly established itself as a formidable and influential benchmark Chinese PHEV in mid-to-high-end overseas markets.
